DISCRIMINATION Everywhere we look, we see differences in wealth, power, and status. Some groups have higher status and greater privilege than others. This inequality in the system is what we call social stratification. In this unequal social system, there is often unfair treatment directed against certain individuals or social groups. This is referred to as discrimination. Discrimination can be based on many different characteristics – age, gender, weight, ethnicity, religion, or even politics. For example, prejudice and discrimination based on race is called racism. Oftentimes, gender prejudice or discrimination is referred to as sexism. Many social groups are marginalized, but it does not mean that they stay at the edge of society. These groups and individuals are constantly fighting for their rights, for the power to make positive changes for their groups. There are many examples of minority movements and stories of success. For example, many countries now recognize a third gender on their census, including India and Nepal! This is a sign of the recognition of citizens’ choice of gender identity. o status /ˈsteɪtəs/ (n) = the social or professional position of somebody in relation to others: địa vị o privilege /ˈprɪvəlɪdʒ/ (n) = a special right or advantage that a particular person or group of people has: đặc quyền o inequality /ˌɪnɪˈkwɑːləti/ (n) = the unfair situation in society when some people have more opportunities, money, etc. than other people: sự bất bình đẳng o discrimination /dɪˌskrɪmɪˈneɪʃn/ (n) = the practice of treating somebody or a particular group in society less fairly than others: sự phân biệt o ethnicity /eθˈnɪsəti/ (n) = a particular ethnic group (= a group of people with a shared culture, tradition, etc.): dân tộc o politics /ˈpɑːlətɪks/ (n) = the activities involved in getting and using power in public life, and being able to influence decisions that affect a country or a society: chính trị o prejudice /ˈpredʒədɪs/ (n) = an unreasonable dislike of or preference for a person, group, custom, etc.: định kiến o to stay at the edge of society: ở bên lề xã hội o third gender = people who do not identify as male or female but as both, neither, or a combination of the two: giới tính thứ ba o census /ˈsensəs/ (n) = the process of officially counting something, especially a country’s population, and recording various facts: việc điều tra dân số Source: https://www.khanacademy.org/test-prep/mcat/individuals-and-society/discrimination/a/examples-of- discrimination-in-society-today SYNONYMS o is what we call ... » is referred to as ...
