CBSE endorses the focus of the National Education Policy (NEP) on reading proficiency, and we are committed to the goal of foundational literacy. This is a prerequisite for helping children make the transition from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’ and for their future schooling. This also aligns closely with our objectives of encouraging the holistic development of learners and providing a stress-free learning environment that will develop competent, confident and enterprising citizens who will promote harmony and peace in the world. We are delighted to start taking steps towards achieving this ambitious goal with the launch of the CBSE Reading Mission, collaboratively implemented with Pratham Books’ StoryWeaver and in partnership with the Central Square Foundation. The Reading Mission aims at building a culture of joyful reading amongst our students, and we are looking forward to the support of the entire CBSE school community - principals, teachers, children, parents and caregivers - in making this vision a reality! 4/27 — Dr. Joseph Emmanuel Director - Academics, Central Board of Secondary Education https://storyweaver.org.in/about/campaigns/cbse-reading-mission CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION
The ability to read is a superpower, and the opportunity to experience reading for pleasure is one of the most significant gifts that we can give to children. Research shows the role that stories play in children’s language development, and in nurturing their mental and emotional wellbeing. Reading with fluency and comprehension helps children build the critical foundational skills they need for becoming lifelong learners. StoryWeaver (www.storyweaver.org.in) is an open-source digital platform from Pratham Books, a not-for-profit publisher of high-quality, affordable, multilingual storybooks for children. Our mission is to put a book in every child’s hand. StoryWeaver offers thousands of openly-licensed storybooks in hundreds of languages, that are free to read, download, print and share. Our endeavour is to create book security for children and arm every child with the power of knowledge and opportunity. StoryWeaver has been recognised by the Digital Public Goods Alliance (incubated by UNICEF and the Government of Norway) as the first Digital Public Good from India for foundational literacy and early grade reading. We are delighted to join hands with CBSE and the Central Square Foundation, and partner on the CBSE Reading Mission - a vital step towards making children fall in love with reading and helping them build a reading habit. We shall give young learners and educators open access to joyful, engaging storybooks in Hindi and English on StoryWeaver, supplementary resources and training materials. We look forward to working together to make the Reading Mission a success, and moving the needle on foundational literacy and the goals of the National Education Policy. 5/27 — R.
