RAPID MODEL: R – RAPPORT BUILDING AND REFLECTIVE LISTENING & A – ASSESSMENT MODULE 2
HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT ₰ A primary foundation of rapport building is conveying an attentive presence and a willingness to listen. ₰ Listening refers to the ability to capture and understand what is being communicated (Egan, 1994) ≈ Its the basis for effective psychological intervention ₰ Carl Rogers – Humanism ₰ Identified the following core conditions for successful counselling: ≈ Empathic understanding (communicating caring and understanding) ≈ Unconditional positive regard (acceptance of someone as a person of worth and value) ≈ Congruence (one’s self-concept aligns with actual experience (Rogers, 1957).
₰ Robert Carkhuff extended Rogers work. ≈ Conditions of respect (focusing on a person’s positive attributes) ≈ Immediacy (expressing what is transpiring in the here and now) ≈ Confrontation (noting discrepancies between what someone says and what he or she is doing) ≈ Concreteness (to focus and discuss relevant issues in specific terms) ≈ Self-disclosure (making one’s self known to others)
PRACTISE OF PRESENCE ₰ Rapport begins with presence. ₰ Rapport is built on the perception of the present interventionist (i.e., having a physical and/or emotional presence)
