NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL VII - OLYMPIAD CDF-1 REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS Introduction - definition & types of reproduction Differences between asexual & sexual reproduction 1. The production of new organisms from the existing organisms of the same species are called reproduction. 2. Plants reproduce new plants from vegetative parts and seeds. 3. Vegetative parts of the plant are leaf, stem, and root. 4. Reproductive part of the plant is the flower. 5. Plants reproduce by two methods: a. Asexual reproduction b. Sexual reproduction 6. The production of new plants from the old plant parts without the usage of gametes is called vegetative reproduction or vegetative propagation. Eg: Rose, Potato, Ginger, Sweet potato, Bryophyllum, Turmeric, Sugarcane and Cactus. 7. Asexual reproduction occurs in unisexual plants. 8. Asexual reproduction the original parent disappears. 9. The production of new plants by the fusion of gametes or sex cells is called sexual reproduction. 10. The special cells involved in sexual reproduction are called gametes or sex cells. Gametes are two types, i. Male gametes ii. Female gamete. 11. Sexual reproduction occurs in bisexual plants. 12. Fusion of gametes gives rise to a zygote is called as fertilisation. 13. Characters are inherited from both the parents. 14. In sexual reproduction, new plants are produced from the seeds. SYNOPSIS-1 Definition types of reproduction Differences between asexual & sexual reproduction Introduction All the living entities are called organisms. The production of new organisms from the existing organisms of the same species is called reproduction. The most important character of plant and animals is to reproduce their new once. Plants reproduce new plants from seeds and vegetative parts. Vegetative parts of the plant are leaf, stem, and root. Reproductive part of the plant is the flower.
VII - OLYMPIAD NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL Types of Reproduction: Plants reproduce by different methods by using different parts of the plant. Plants basically reproduce by two methods. i. Asexual reproduction ii. Sexual Reproduction. The special cells are involved in sexual reproduction are known as gametes or sex cells. Gametes are two types, i. Male gametes ii. Female gamete. Asexual Reproduction: The production of new plants from the old plant parts without the usage of gametes is called vegetative reproduction or vegetative propagation. The new plants are not produced from seeds. Vegetative parts like leaf, stem and root are involved in the vegetative reproduction. Eg: Rose, Potato, Ginger, Sweet potato, Bryophyllum, Turmeric, Sugarcane and Cactus. Asexual reproduction occurs in unisexual plants. Asexual reproduction the original parent disappers. Sexual Reproduction: The production of new plants by the fusion of gametes or sex cells is called sexual reproduction. Male and female gametes are involved in the sexual reproduction. Fusion of gametes gives rise to a zygote is called as fertilisation.
NEET BIOLOGY STUDY MATERIAL VII - OLYMPIAD In sexual reproduction, new plants are produced from the seeds. Eg: Wheat, Maize, Paddy, Sunflower, Cotton, Mango and Drumstick. Difference between Asexual and Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction Sexual Reproduction Only one parent plant is involved Both male and female parents are involved Occurs in unisexual plants Occurs in bisexual plants Occurs in lower plants Occurs in higher plants Reproductive organs are not required Fully developed reproductive organs are present In most of the methods the original parent disappears Original parents remain alive after process of fertilisation Process like gametes formation and fertilisation are absent Fusion of gametes give rise to zygote Characteristic of only one parent is inherited Characteristic of both parents are inherited Seeds are not involved Seeds are used to get new plants from a flower
