Grade 3 Writing – 3005b Term 1 Week 5 – Lesson 5 NOTE: The Naplan English Test will be done in the second session this week. Week 6 is Exam Week – Blue/Black Pens required. Greeting/ Feedback Ask students to share how they felt about writing their narrative about an animal escaping the zoo. • Did they find it easy or difficult? • What did they enjoy about this task? • Ask some students to share what they wrote. • Call on students to identify their beginning, middle and end. Present feedback from past essays - You may also choose to present a model essay. General feedback examples • Paragraphs- what they are and how they are used. • Word choice- highlight the use of a thesaurus. • Need for a clear beginning, middle and end with a problem and solution. • Importance of setting and character descriptions. Remind students that if they did not submit their work today, it cannot be marked. To get the most out of the writing programme, students should always hand in their work on time. Fun Fact of the Day Focus (1): Quick Writes Set a timer for 40 seconds (recommended) or choose a time you wish to spend on each Quick Write activity. Time should not exceed 2 minutes per topic. Ask students to write as much as they can about the topics.

Focus (2): This week’s writing task Informative writing • What is informative writing? • Can you think of any examples of informative writing? Informative writing Helps to educate the reader by presenting facts about a specific subject. This week, you are educating the reader about things you like to do in summer. You may even make suggestions to the reader about where they can go in summer based on your own experiences. Think about what you like to do and why you enjoy doing it. It is not enough to say that you like going to the beach. Give more information about why you like going to these places and examples or anecdotes of these experiences. This will make your piece more informative and detailed. An informative writing piece needs to have: ü An exciting introduction to grab the reader’s attention and introduce the topic ü Clear information about the topic ü Details such as anecdotes and examples ü A conclusion that summarises the main points Using the five senses in your informative writing. Last week, we talked about how the five senses could be used in our writing to add more detail to our descriptions. These help the reader to visualise what is happening in your story. How do you think you could use them in your informative writing this week?
Think of one of your favourite places to go in summer. Focus (4): Verbs What is a verb? A verb is a word or group of words used to describe processes like actions, thinking, feeling, and saying.
