Year 11 Project – Milton Science College We are worried about the environmental effect which the college has on both the local and national ecosystems through energy use, food waste and methods of travel to college. We want the college to reduce this by 10% in the next 12 months. 1. Energy use Standard light bulbs are used throughout the school. Lights are not turned off in empty classrooms. The computer rooms are only used in the afternoons. At other times, they are empty, but both the lights and the equipment are left on all the time. The buildings are not built to modern standards, so a lot of heat is lost. It is too expensive to improve the buildings, but by taking some simple actions, we can reduce the amount of energy which is wasted. 2. Food waste in the restaurant Firstly, too much food is ordered every week by the kitchen staff because they do not want to run out of anything. Only about 75% of the fresh food is used. In addition, a lot of food is left on students’ plates, and neither the extra food nor the waste is recycled, e.g., to feed animals. The kitchen staff get rid of it in the general rubbish. 3. Travel to college Fifty-five per cent of students are driven to college by their parents (see Figure 1). Thirty-five per cent are brought by the school bus, six per cent cycle and four per cent walk. As you can see in Figure 2, seventy-eight per cent of staff drive to college in their own car. Twelve per cent are brought by another staff member. Only eight per cent cycle and only two per cent walk, because these people live close to the college. None of the staff live on bus routes, but
