Give one geographical reason for the sprinkler irrigation being practised in arid and semi-arid regions. 2018 Ans Sprinkler irrigation is practised in arid and semi-arid regions because this type of irrigation does not involve any loss of water by seepage or evaporation, as water is supplied through pipes. It is not exposed to the Sun. 2. Give one reason for the following: 2016 Although expensive, yet sprinkler irrigation is gaining popularity in recent times. Ans Although considered as expensive sprinkler irrigation is gaining popularity in recent times because there is no loss of water by seepage or evaporation. 3. In which part of the country, wells are the most important means of irrigation? 2002 Ans In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar wells are the most important means of irrigation. 4. Name any two states, in which tank irrigation is given more importance. 2001 Ans Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are two states, where tank irrigation is significant. 5. Irrigation through groundwater is still popular despite big river projects, why? 2000 Ans Groundwater irrigation is popular because abundance of water availability. 2 Marks Questions 1. With reference to Hirakud project answer the following: Semester-II 2022 (i) On which river is it based? (ii) Name an Indian State benefitted by Hirakud project. Ans (i) Hirakud project is based on Mahanadi River. (ii) Odisha has benefitted greatly by the Hirakud project. 2. Mention one agricultural and one industrial problem solved by the Bhakra Nangal Dam. 2020 Ans Bhakra Nangal Dam solved the agricultural problem of soil erosion. It also solved the energy crists of industries by providing regular electricity supply. 3. Mention any two methods of recharging ground water aquifers. 2020 Ans Two methods of recharging ground water aquifers are • Constructing recharging wells. • Constructing recharge pits and shafts.

(i) Name the most common means of irrigation used in India. 2020 (ii) Give one reason for the popularity of this means of irrigation in our country. Ans (i) Canals are the most common source of irrigation used in India. In Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Northern Rajasthan, canals are used to irrigate the soil. (ii) Reasons for the popularity of canal irrigation is • As compared to conventional watering, higher productivity per hectare land is obtained due to canals. • The canals constructed are permanent means of irrigation which can be used when there is fluctuation in rainfall. 5. "The modern means of irrigation are gaining popularity." 2019 Give two reasons to justify this statement. Ans The modern methods of irrigation are gaining popularity as in the conventional methods of irrigation a large quantity of water is wasted due to waterlogging and often results in gradual salinity of the soil. It does not happen in modern methods of irrigation such as drip irrigation method and sprinkler irrigation method. Sprinkler irrigation method is suitable for arid and semi-arid region because it does not involve any loss of water by seepage or evaporation. 6. Mention two factors that favour the development of tube well irrigation in Punjab. 2019 Ans Punjab state has extensive use of tubewells. The importance and reason for the development of tube wells as a source of irrigation in Punjab are as follows: (i) The level of water table is high in Punjab due to which tubewell irrigation is favourable. (ii) The soil in Punjab is soft which makes it easier to dug holes required for tubewell irrigation. 7. There is plenty of rain in India during the rainy season, yet we need irrigation. Give two reasons to support this statement. 2018 Ans Yes, there is plenty of rain in India, yet we need irrigation because: (i) The rainfall through monsoon is not the same at every place. (ii) It fluctuates every year i.e. there may be good rainfall in one year and there may be a drought in year. 8. (i) (Name three traditional means of irrigation. (ii) Give a reason why traditional means of irrigation are still important in most parts of India. 2018 Ans (i) The three traditional means of irrigation are: • Basin Irrigation • Strip Irrigation • Furrow Irrigation (ii) Traditional means of irrigation are still important in most parts of India because these are more sustainable as they are easy to use, due to which farmers use them extensively. 9. Give a reason for the significance of irrigation in 2017 (i) Punjab (ii) Rajasthan Ans (i) Punjab is the major wheat producing state in India. Rainfall, in the state is irregular, particularly in the Rabi season, when wheat is grown. Thus, irrigation works are required extensively in Punjab. This is done through an extensive network of canals. (ii) Rajasthan receives scanty rainfall as it is in the Western part of India and the South-West monsoon has lost most of its moisture before arriving there. So here also irrigation is important, which is done through canals.

Clarify the statement by giving two reasons. 2016 Ans Without irrigation, development of agriculture is difficult in India because of (i) the variation in monsoon from place to place i.e. rainfall through the monsoon is not the same at every place and (ii) it fluctuates every year i.e. there may be good rainfall in one year and there may be a drought in another year. 11. State two reasons why irrigation is important to a country like India. 2015 Ans Following are the reasons why irrigation is important to a country like India : (i) India essentially being an agriculture country, needs water for agriculture as well as for other uses. (ii) Demand of water for irrigation is ever increasing in India due to rapidly increasing population of the country. 12. Name two modern methods of irrigation. State one important reason for their growing popularity. 2015 Ans The two modern methods of irrigation are: (i) Sprinkler irrigation (ii) Drip irrigation The modern methods of irrigation are getting popular because they are best for conserving water and best suited for arid and semi-arid regions. 13. State the significance of rainwater harvesting. 2015 Ans Rainwater harvesting increases the availability for water during dry season by increasing the levels of dried borewells and wells. It improves the quality of groundwater by reducing salinity. Harvesting rainwater does not lead to any type of pollution. It is cost effective and easily affordable. 14. Give two main reasons why water scarcity occurs in India. 2013 Ans Water carcity occurs in India due to the following reasons : (i) Monsoons are seasonal in nature. (ii) Transformation of society into urban and industrial has increased the requirement of water. 15. Mention two advantages of rainwater harvesting. 2012 Ans The advantages of rainwater harvesting are as follows: (any two) (i) It prevents water from being wasted. (ii) It raises the groundwater table. (ii) There should be a means of filling up the canal with water on a regular basis. 16. State one advantage and one disadvantage of large dam. 2005 Ans One advantage of large dams is that they provide water for irrigation. One disadvantage of large dams is that they prevent the natural flow of river water, causing excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir created by the dam. 17. Irrigation is indispensable for an agricultural country like India. Give two reasons to explain why artificial irrigation is essential. 2000 Ans Two reasons for artificial irrigation being essential for India are (i) Unequal distribution of rain over land. (ii) Seasonal monsoon type of climate.
