Understanding the origin of eponyms in the homework practice: afghan The blanket/covering takes its name from the country of Afghanistan. badminton The sport was named after the home of the Duke of Beaufort. cashmere The soft fabric is named after the place ‘Kashmir’. currants This fruit was named after the city of Corinth in Ancient Greece. spaniel This breed of dog is named after España (Spain). denim This practical fabric takes its name from a French town called Nîmes. atoll The local word for the Maldive Islands is atolu, meaning ‘reef’. turquoise This stone is named after the country of Turkey. mayonnaise Named after the city of Mahón. canary Named after the Canary Islands off western Africa.
