PHARMD GURU Page 1 INTRODUCTION:  The central sterile services department (CSSD), also called sterile processing department (SPD), sterile processing, central supply department (CSD), or central supply, is an integrated place in hospitals and other health care facilities that performs sterilization and other actions on medical devices, equipment and consumables.  The essentials of this department are correct design, appropriate equipments, skillful operators and a unidirectional work flow.  Each of these has equipments in place in order to perform specific functions towards sterilization of articles for immediate use in patient care.  All The hospitals should establish an adequate CSSD set-up and adopt strict quality control processes with the latest technology to mitigate hospital acquired infections. DEFINITION:  The central sterile supply department of a hospital has been defined as a centralized unit which provides professional supplies & equipments to all specialized departments.  The specialized departments which are served include all nursing departments, clinicians, certain specialized labs such as cardiac lab (cauterization) and operating rooms.  Single use of items such as syringes, tubes, urine collection sets, I.V administration sets, needles, gloves, blood bags, are dispensed by central sterile supply room.  The CSSD should have four zones : 1) The unclean and washing area, 2) The assembly and packing area, 3) The sterilization area and 4) The sterile area. PHARMD GURU Page 2 OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS: The objectives of central service include the following:  To provide inventoried supplies and equipment to customer areas.  To promote better patient care by providing prompt and accurate service.  To provide supplies of sterile linen packs, basins, instruments, and other sterile items.  To maintain an accurate record of the effectiveness of the cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing processes.  To strive for uniformity and simplicity in the trays and sets that the department provides.  To maintain an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment.  To monitor and enforce controls necessary to prevent cross infection according to infection control policies.  To establish and maintain sterile processing and distribution standards. CSSR has dual functions: 1. Cleaning, packaging and distribution of medical equipments and supplies which is the responsibility of the nurse. 2. Manufacturing of sterile fluids which is the responsibility of pharmacist.
PHARMD GURU Page 3 Figure 1FUNCTIONS & ACTIVITIES PHARMACIST ROLES OF CSSR:  Preparation of solutions in bulk and transport tanks to CSSR for bottling and sterilization.  Prepare and package the solutions for sterilization by CSSR.  Prepare a concentration solution which is than the diluted, packaged and sterilized in CSSR.  Prepare a mixture of chemicals in dry state which when dissolved in the specified volume of distilled water results in a desired product which is then packed and sterilized by CSSR panel members. QUALIFICATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF HOSPITAL PHARMACIST TO MANAGE CSSR:  Interviewing the sales persons, promoters.  Meeting with and discussing procedures or specific problems with medical staff.  Purchases of supplies.  Receiving and storing of supplies.  Distribution of supplies.  Dispensing of supplies in a small lots.
