Nội dung text WRITING 12 - TWO-PART QUESTION [1].docx

CAUSE - SOLUTION Exam question 1 Cycling is a healthier and more environmentally friendly form of transport. Nevertheless, cycling is getting less popular. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to make cycling more popular? [trend/ development/ tendency] 1. Compare past vs present 2. Rely on other trends + urban planning + cycling: generally slower compared to other modes of transport → less appealing on today’s fast-paced world
Although cycling affords / offers numerous health and environmental benefits, its popularity has been declining / waning in recent years. This essay will first outline the underlying causes of this phenomenon/ trend, before proposing some measures to encourage bicycle usage. The decline in cycling can be attributed to two main factors. One of these is that urban planning disproportionately favors cars while neglecting cycling infrastructure. This can be seen in many cities like Hanoi and Bangkok, where bike lanes are practically non-existent, and cyclists have no choice but to merge into heavy traffic. Cycling with larger, faster vehicles can be intimidating and dangerous, which discourages many from riding bicycles in those cities. Moreover, cycling is generally slower than other modes of transport, which makes it less appealing in today’s fast-paced world where speed and efficiency are highly valued. To promote cycling, the following steps should be taken. First, governments should invest more in constructing infrastructure catering to cyclists. Adopting more dedicated bike lanes and bike parking facilities can make cycling safer and more convenient, thereby incentivizing/ encouraging people to use bicycles for their daily commutes. In tandem / parallel with this, integrating cycling with forms of public transport could further promote its use. Providing bike racks on trains and buses, for example, would make it easier for people to combine cycling with longer commutes, mitigating concerns about journey time and distance. Such a two-pronged/ dual approach can go a long way towards promoting the habit of using bicycles in the general public.
To summarize, the decline in cycling is primarily/ largely due to the lack of proper infrastructure and the longer travel times compared to other forms of transport. To reverse this trend, governments should invest immensely in cycling facilities and integrate cycling with public transport, making it a safer, more convenient, and appealing choice for the public.
