PART II – ĐỌC CHỌN ĐÁP ÁN ĐÚNG TEST 1 Julie MacAndrew I've always been fascinated by history, so being an archaeologist I'm able to dig into the past and explore all the things I'm interested in, and get paid for it. I also love the fresh air which is great because even though there is some office work, most of the time I'm outside. My interest started when I was about eight. There was something on TV about a farmer finding some gold coins in his field, and I thought that was magic. When I was at school I was hopeless at things like languages but good at subjects like science and history. I'm lucky because at that time some parts of an ancient Roman bathhouse were discovered near my town, and during my school holidays I went along to watch and help. So when I left school, university didn't attract me -1 wanted to work immediately. The man in charge offered me a job - for not much money but I learnt a lot from him. Not just practical things but also how to get the best out of the people you're working with. That's been a great help to me. Now, I specialise in what's called Rescue Archaeology - if a company is going to build on some land, we get there first and make a record of what's in the ground before it disappears. I have the same group of people working with me on every job - we get on very well together and have some good laughs. We're friends outside work too - some of us are members of a women's football team. But often, if I've been outside in the cold and wet all day, all I want to do is stay at home and plan my next day. When I go to bed I sleep very well! 1. What can a reader learn about Julie from the text? A She is equally happy working outside or inside. B. She is surprised at how much she gets paid in her work. C. She seems to be very happy in her job. D. She likes exploring different countries. 2. How does Julie say that her love of archaeology began? A. A discovery was made in a field near her home. ● B. A teacher helped her to become interested in history. C. She had always had a special interest in it. D. She saw part of a television programme. 3. Why does Julie describe herself as 'lucky'? A. because she was good at certain subjects at school B. because she could earn some money during the school holidays C. because she discovered an important Roman monument
D. because she had a chance to see archaeologists at work 4. What makes her work even more enjoyable? A. the people she works with B. the different places she is sent to C. the chance to work at home sometimes D. the opportunity to play some sport 5. What does the phrase “we get on very well” in the last paragraph mean? A. we have good relationship B. We are very good C. We keep fit and healthy D. We have a lot of relatives TEST 2 THE ARTIST People think being an artist must be a wonderful way to earn one’s living. Of course, there are lots of great things about working for oneself, at home alone. What I really like is that nobody tells me what time to start in the morning, what to wear; or whether I can take the afternoon off and go to a football match. But then, I have no one to chat with when I"m bored, no one to discuss last night’s match with during the lunch-hour. Sure, I can spend the afternoon doing something I enjoy like swimming, walking the dog, or even sleeping, if I choose. But the work will still be there when I do finally get back home, and it’s still got to be finished in time. Unfortunately, working at home means that people can always find me, whether I’m bored or not and once I’ve answered the doorbell, it’s too late, my thoughts have been interrupted. No one would dream of calling if I worked in an office, but in an office I find myself making cups of coffee and listening to friends’ troubles. As they talk, my ideas disappear and I feel increasingly stressed thinking of my work waiting to be done. However, when I hear the traffic news on the radio, and imagine my friends sitting miserably in their cars in a jam, feeling bored, or waiting unhappily for an overcrowded tram in the rain, I realise that I really haven't got much to complain about. I find a CD which will start me thinking, turn it up really loudly and begin another picture. 1. What is the word “Unfortunately” in the last paragraph stand for A. Unluckily B. Luckily C. Definitely D. Likely
