2 COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY : INTRODUCTION • Cognitive psychology deals with our mental life: what goes on inside our heads when we perceive, attend, remember, think, categorize, reason, decide, and so forth. • Our everyday lives involve a great deal of cognition. Everyday cognition is complex, often involving several cognitive processes. Much of our cognitive processing occurs so often, so rapidly, and with so little effort that we may not even know it is taking place. • Key challenge : Laboratory experiments must mimic real world settings and the way cognitive processes take place in the real world. (ecological validity, or generalizability to the real world situations in which people think and act.) Galotti 3 ASSUMPTIONS OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY • Mental processes exist • Mental processes can be studied scientifically • Active information processors 4

4 INFORMATION PROCESSING APPROACH • Boxes and arrows model of cognition : Stores and processes • Use Experimental and Quasi-experimental techniques of investigation What are some real- world applications and implications of the information processing approach ? Galotti 7 2. THE CONNECTIONIST APPROACH Reference: Galotti and Matlin 8
