Summer Pockets (2018) in-Depth Analysis 3 1. About Myself: 自己紹介 During winter 2016 of my college years I picked anime back up after a long hiatus since the times of Toonami. I first started with Strike the Blood (don’t question it, it was airing) and then moved to SAO, Plastic Memories, Your Lie in April in that order. After I finished YLIA, I realized that I really enjoyed drama anime; while scrolling through the comments to an episode of YLIA, I was told that Clannad was even more emotional, so I decided to give it a watch. Ever since watching Clannad I became a fan of Key and to this day it’s still my favorite anime of all time. Since then I have watched all the Key anime adaptations and read the visual novels of Clannad, Rewrite, Harmonia, Planetarian, and most recently, Summer Pockets (Summer 2019). I am not the biggest fan of writing papers but I do like analyzing stories, especially stories I really enjoyed reading. I’ve been studying Japanese for 4 years and minored in it during college, largely inspired by my time reading Key works. I went to Japan once for a 2 week school-sponsored course in Kyoto and would definitely want to visit Japan again. My Japanese skill level is currently between N3-N2, however, I have never taken the actual proficiency test since I plan to only take N1 (and pass it of course). It would be nice to apply Japanese into my future career so I might look into that while job searching, but I plan to mainly work in the software industry. I would like to take up translating visual novels as a hobby in the near future after my job searching has been situated. Lately, I’ve still been watching anime but not as much as I used to; I will try to read more visual novels in the future, even though they tend to be quite the time sink. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this Summer Pockets Analysis, it was a fun experience which took many days to complete. 2. Introduction: 紹介 So before we delve into the analysis, I was able to read this visual novel after buying a physical copy of the game online and then using a regional unlocker, AlphaROM (so no I did not torrent or download an illegal copy :3 ). I used a dictionary to read (interactive text hooker) and my limited Japanese language experience (around N3 level). I did sometimes make use of Google Translate when I didn’t know how to interpret the sentences. It took me around 65-70 hours to complete this VN. I reread the entire VN in English while writing this which took 13.66 hours total. This second read through gave me a lot more insight than the first time I read it. After I read the entire thing I talked about my conclusions with some other people who had already finished the VN and then refined some of my thoughts. I wrote the original analysis back in Summer 2019 but the parts that were added here were written in Winter 2020. What you are reading below is the final product.
