You will hear the recording twice. 1. When did Amy have lessons with a piano teacher? A. at the age of four. B. before she started secondary school. C. after getting advice from her school music teacher. 2. How did Amy feel at her first big public event? A. excited because she was wearing a wonderful costume. B. nervous because it was her first time on stage. C. surprised because the audience was very big. 3. What does Amy say about playing jazz with the school band? A. She put lots of effort into learning about it. B. She was better at it than the rest of the players. C. She enjoyed it as soon as she started. 4. Amy gives piano lessons so that she can _____________. A. help people who couldn’t normally afford them. B. encourage lots of young people to play the piano. C. improve her own playing technique. 5. Why does Amy write a blog on the internet? A. to get some experience for becoming a journalist. B. to tell people about her daily life as a musician. C. to recommend events for people to go to. TRANSCRIPT Interviewer: Today I'm talking to Amy Manero, who's played the piano for 12 years - but is still only 16! Amy, how did you start? Amy: Well, my father's a musician. He taught me some basic tunes when I was only four! Then after a couple of years my parents paid for me to have after-school piano classes. I played classical music with my piano teacher every week until I began secondary school. I gave up extra lessons then, even though my
2 school music teacher, Mrs. Jones, said I needed more practice. But I was already getting a lot of help from her by then. Interviewer: So what was your first big performance like? Amy: Well, by the time I performed at my first big event, I'd already been in lots of small competitions. So playing on stage was nothing new, although I had no idea so many people would come to watch us that evening! That was amazing! My mother had bought me a wonderful dress and, normally I'd love that, but that evening I was so busy I hardly noticed! Interviewer: And then you started jazz piano. Did you enjoy playing jazz? Amy: Well, my school was starting a jazz band, so I joined. They were all good players, though, and I had no idea what jazz even was then! And I couldn't understand the music at first, so I got quite annoyed with it. But after a while I began to love it, so for a year I studied all I could on jazz. Interviewer: And you give music lessons now, don't you? Amy: Yes, basic piano. I'm keen that as many young people as possible become interested in music. I charge a low fee as I'm not a qualified teacher - but lessons are not too expensive in my town anyway. I pass people on to experienced teachers when they're ready - or introduce them to other instruments if the piano's not for them. Teaching helps my playing, too, although that's not the reason I do it. Interviewer: And you also write a blog on the internet. Amy: Yeah, it's like a diary - I write a bit every day for people to read, about school and so on. I love writing even more than music, so it's great to do it. I write about my favourite musicians - especially one who's also a journalist. And I talk about music shows I attend - if they're good. I advertise them! Interviewer: So what is it about music that you love? Amy: Well, I've never met anyone who hates it! Everyone finds something they like. But it communicates to everyone whether they speak English or not. And music can sound just as great played by an older musician as it can by a younger person like me. Interviewer: Amy, thanks very much. Part 2. You will hear a boy, called Adam, telling his class about a hot air balloon flight he went on. Fill in each blank with NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS. You will hear the recording twice. ADAM’S HOT AIR BALLOON FLIGHT 6. The flight in the balloon lasted ______ an hour _______. 7. Adam could see as far as the ______ mountains _______ from the balloon. 8. Adam didn’t recognize a ______ local bridge _______ from the air. 9. Adam was surprised that it was _______ warm ______ in the balloon basket. 10. Adam didn’t like having to _______ stand ______ in the basket.
3 TRANSCRIPT Hello everyone. My name's Adam, and I want to tell you about a trip I did with my family in a hot air balloon—a huge balloon filled with hot air, with a basket underneath. Amazing! We set off early in the morning near my home. It was a couple of hours after sunrise when we left. We were up in the balloon for an hour, although because of the training with our pilot, Ben, before we took off, the whole experience took three hours in all. The view was amazing. I was able to see right across our town and all the way to the mountains. There were some huge birds flying around, and because the balloon was so silent, they weren't afraid. We also flew over some great sites in our area, like the castle, which I go to a lot, and the river. And I didn't realise that a bridge we flew over was the one I crossed to school every day. It looked really different. Everyone had said I should wear thick clothes for the flight, as it would be cold in the basket. But in fact, it felt warm, partly because of the hot air inside the balloon. The only problem was that it got a bit uncomfortable in the basket. There were only six of us, so it wasn't crowded, but there was nowhere to sit, so we had to stand all the way. I really wanted a few cushions. Soon it was time to come down again. Balloons often land somewhere like a farm or a park, but Ben had arranged for us to come down on a golf course. There was a crowd watching when we got to the ground. It was all fantastic anyway, and I really want to go again soon. Part 3. Listen to Adam and Emma talking about holidays and decide whether each of the following statements is True (T) or False (F). You will hear the recording twice. 11. Adam has already booked his holiday. T 12. Emma doesn’t like sitting on beaches all day. F 13. Emma might not go on holiday this year. F 14. Adam usually goes to Scotland in the summer. F 15. Emma thinks that hotels in Scotland are expensive. T TRANSCRIPT EMMA: Hi Adam. ADAM: Hi Emma. EMMA: Have you made any holiday plans yet? ADAM: Well actually I've just been on the phone. I've booked a flight and a hotel. EMMA: Really? I'm still thinking about where to go. So where are you going? ADAM: Oh somewhere I've always dreamed of. Barbados. I love hot sunny places and golden beaches. EMMA: Oh so do I. And I can't stand walking around boring old museums.
4 ADAM: Neither can I. It's worse than staying at home. So anyway where do you want to go? EMMA: Well if I had £2,000 I'd go travelling in India. But I don't. So I might go to Portugal for a week. Or visit my sister in Scotland. I definitely won't stay at home that's for sure. ADAM: When I was a child my family and I used to go to Scotland for the summer. It's really nice although it may have changed since I was last there. EMMA: Yeah and it's not as expensive as going to Portugal. Hotel prices are really high in Scotland but I can stay with my sister you see. She lives near Edinburgh. ADAM: Well that sounds great. If I were you I think I'd go to Scotland. EMMA: That's easy for you to say. You're going to Barbados. PART B: PHONETICS (5 points) Question I. Choose the word whose underlined part is pronounced differently from the rest in the same line.
