2 TRANSCRIPT So let's look at the process we use, what we extract from the tire in each stage, and the uses that those materials can be put to. The first step of the process mechanically extracts the steel wires from the rim of the tire. This high-quality wire can be cut into small pellets suitable for sandblasting shots. Next, after the tires have been sliced into a number of segments depending on tire diameter, they are chemically treated. This chemical treatment is essential as it removes dirt from the rubber prior to the rest of the process. The cleaning process also softens the tires, making them easier to chop up. In the next stage, the fiber cords contained in the tire segments are separated from the rubber using rollers. The fibers, which can include nylon and rayon, can be used as reinforcement for concrete or they can be used to form plastic panels. Then the rubber is cut up into very small pieces known as crumb rubber. For a tire weighing ten kilograms, the electric process can recover seven and a half kilograms of crumb rubber that can be used to manufacture a range of rubber products, such as asphalt used in road making. It is also used as insulation in buildings or something simple like tiles for the floor. Alternatively, any or all of this crumb rubber can continue through to the final stage. This final stage involves a patented milectrovac machine, which uses industrial microwave energy. This changes the remaining rubber into hydrocarbon, which can be used to make three different products. We can cheaply produce activated carbon, which is usually quite expensive to make from new materials. It is used for treating water as well as being an integral part of air filters. Secondly, as the carbon produced is very pure, in fact, it is over 97.4% pure, we can crush it to form something called carbon black, which is used in the manufacture of batteries and also ink. Our process is very flexible, and we can alter the quantity of each of the three products depending on demand. Finally, we can even use the hydrocarbon to make oil, and we use this to generate electricity to power our own machines. It certainly helps to keep the costs down. And that's just about it. So if there are any questions, we can now... Part 2. For question 6-10, listen to a recording about the walking shark and decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F). Write your answers in the corresponding numbered boxes provided. (10 pts) 6. Epaulette shark’s existence on Earth is relatively short in comparison with other species of sharks. T 7. Though epaulette shark has fins that resemble legs, those fins are actually thick and inflexible. F 8. The heat endurance of epaulette shark is greater than the majority of other species of fish. T 9. Epaulette sharks are able to breathe on land for up to one hour. F 10. The striking similarities in biological systems between epaulette sharks and bull sharks are testimony to
3 magical evolution. F TRANSCRIPT Scientists in far north Australia have made a startling new discovery that has to be seen to be believed. At just 9 million years old, the epilate shark is the youngest shark species on the planet. And look what it can do! It has thick, round, muscular fins that it can bend and use like legs. Now, this shark takes this behavior one step further—make that many steps. The largest epilate shark is three feet long. It's a hardy animal that can tolerate water so hot it would kill any other fish. On land, it slows its breathing and heart rate, allowing it to survive for an hour or even longer without any water at all. The epilate shark may be different from a great white or a bull shark, but it's evidence of evolution. Just like whales were once land animals that returned to the ocean, sharks may evolve one day to come onto land. Part 3. You will hear part of an interview with two graphic designers called Anita Dickinson and Joe Connolly in which they talk about going freelance. For questions 11-15, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which fits best according to what you hear. (10pts) 11. What does Joe say about when he first started working freelance? A. It was more complicated than he'd expected. B. He resented having less free time than before. C. It was necessary to have the right attitude to work. D. He found it easy to find clients through his website. 12. Joe confesses that having to work at home on his own is ________________. A. a relief after working in a busy office. B. a cause of loneliness for him at times. C. something that he avoids as much as possible. D. something that he thought he would dislike. 13. When asked about self-discipline, Anita claims that ________________. A. she checks her daily work output very carefully. B. she is rarely tempted away from work by social media. C. she needs certain apps to keep her focused on work. D. she is often forced to change her working hours to fulfill contracts. 14. Anita and Joe agree that keeping up to date with trends is ________________. A. less important than being a specialist in one area. B. difficult when balanced against other demands on time. C. one of the most enjoyable sides of their work.
4 D. not as challenging as they’d expected it to be. 15. What does Joe think is the reason for his success as a freelancer? A. He has effective negotiating skills. B. He makes sure he has good relations with clients. C. He gets plenty of personal recommendations. D. He offers his services at the right price. TRANSCRIPT Interviewer: With me on “Work and Money’ are two successful freelancers, Anita Dickinson and Joe Connolly, who both worked as graphic designers at major companies but left to go it alone. Woman: Hi. Man: Hello. Interviewer: Anita, tell us about your decision to go freelance. Woman: Basically, I’d been working in a well-paid position for some time and I was undeniably proud of the fact that people at the company viewed the stuff I produced very favourably. No job’s secure in today’s economic climate, and I realised being employed wasn’t necessarily as safe as I’d thought. I began a transition, doing freelance work on the side, and gradually building up a client base. My only doubt was whether thls’d be enough to rely on to cover the salary and perks I'd lose by going it alone. Anyway, I’ve always been an Independent person and the idea of being my own boss was ultimately irresistible. Interviewer: What about you, Joe? Man: One of the biggest excuses for not going freelance is not knowing how to get started. Clearly, you have to feel confident you know the craft, but beyond that, I simply exploited my own skills to the full and ensured I had a website that I thought would draw in clients. OK, so there was a little more to it than that, but getting started really wasn’t all that complex, even if it took a while before business started pouring in. Fundamentally, it was about a willingness to sacrifice time, working evenings and weekends. Unfortunately, there’s no room for any reluctance on that score. Being realistic about such things made it possible for me to become a full-time freelancer. Interviewer: Do you enjoy working alone rather than with other people? Man: Well, I thrived in the hustle and bustle of an office setting - working in teams, bouncing ideas off others, the odd joke with a colleague. I did seriously wonder if working alone would be my cup of tea. It can certainly lead to a sense of isolation for some. Whole days with just yourself for company might become unbearable. Fortunately for me, there are frequent opportunities for human contact - meetings, and consultations about certain contracts - almost too many. Thankfully, I’ve barely experienced any problems being on my own. Interviewer: Is self-discipline very important, Anita?
