Festivals are fun and full of joy. They often include music, dancing, food, and decorations. Types of Festivals: 1. Religious Festivals: ▪ Diwali: Diwali is the festival of lights. People light lamps, burst fireworks, and share sweets. ▪ Christmas: Christmas is celebrated as the birthday of Jesus Christ. People decorate Christmas trees, exchange gifts, and sing carols. ▪ Eid: Eid is a festival that marks the end of Ramadan. People pray, feast, and give gifts to each other. 2. Cultural Festivals: ▪ Holi: Holi is the festival of colours. People throw coloured powders and water at each other, dance, and enjoy sweets. ▪ Lohri: Lohri is a festival celebrated in Punjab. People light bonfires, sing, and dance around the fire. 3. National Festivals: ▪ Independence Day: Independence Day is celebrated on August 15th. It marks the day India became free from British rule. People hoist the national flag and sing patriotic songs. ▪ Republic Day: Republic Day is celebrated on January 26th. It marks the day India became a republic. There are parades, and people display the culture and strength of India. Why We Celebrate Festivals: ▪ Joy and Happiness: Festivals bring joy and happiness to everyone. ▪ Togetherness: Festivals bring people together. Families and friends meet and celebrate. ▪ Culture and Tradition: Festivals help us remember our culture and traditions. ▪ Fun Activities: During festivals, people enjoy fun activities like dancing, singing, and playing games. Festivals celebrate seasons and nature- Many festivals are connected to changes in nature, like spring or harvest time. Example: The Kashmir tulip festival celebrates spring flowers. Different regions have unique festivals- Various parts of India celebrate different festivals based on local traditions. Example: Vishu in Kerala, Spring festival in Jammu, Sarhul in Jharkhand.

Example: Haakh (leafy vegetable) is eaten during the Kashmir tulip festival. Nature's beauty is appreciated during festivals- Many festivals celebrate the beauty of nature, like flowers blooming. Example: Placing mustard and buransh flowers at doorsteps during the spring festival in Jammu. Festivals bring people together- Celebrations are a time for family and community to come together. Example: Rishi visiting his relatives and celebrating with them. Travel safety is important ▪ When traveling to visit family or attend festivals, it's crucial to follow safety rules. Example: Observing road signs and taking precautions on mountain roads. Question and Answer Session Discuss 1. Have you ever travelled in a bus? If yes, share the experience with your classmates. We should stay seated, not put our hands out of the window, and follow the instructions of the driver and conductor. 4. What safety measures should you take while riding a bicycle and while walking on the road? Ans. While cycling, wear a helmet and follow traffic rules. While walking, use sidewalks and cross at zebra crossings.
