The Great Wall of China is the oldest historical site on this list. A small part of the wall was built in the 7th century BCE to protect the country from enemies. Petra is an ancient city in southern Jordan which was built as a place for people to buy and sell goods. It dates back to 400 BCE, although we do not have a historical record until the Greeks attacked the city in 312 BCE. The inhabitants defended the city, but it was finally conquered by the Romans in 106 CE. The ruins were rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.
