It was built between 72 and 96 CE to hold over 60,000 people watching the violent games of Roman times. The Great Wall of China is the oldest historical site on this list. A small part of the wall was built in the 7th century BCE to protect the country from enemies. However, most was completed between 1368 and 1644 CE, during the Ming dynasty. The wall is approximately 13,171 miles long. Machu Picchu is an ancient city in Peru, high in the Andes mountains. The city was built by the Inca empire around 1450, but people stopped living there a hundred years later when the Spanish arrived in South America. No one is sure of its original purpose, but it was probably a palace for an Incan ruler. Petra is an ancient city in southern Jordan which was built as a place for people to buy and sell goods. It dates back to 400 BCE, although we do not have a historical record until the Greeks attacked the city in 312 BCE.
