Unit 1: Introduction to Research Projects (8Hours) 1 | P a g e WWW.NOTEDINSIGHTS.COM Unit 1: Introduction to Research Projects (8Hours) 1.1 Overview of research in academia. Research is a process of enquiry and investigation; it is systematic, methodical and ethical; research can help solve practical problems and increase knowledge. – Academia According to the American sociologist Earl Robert Babbie, “research is a systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict, and control the observed phenomenon. It involves inductive and deductive methods.” 1.2 Objectives of Research THE PURPOSE OF RESEARCH IS TO... • Review or synthesize existing knowledge • Investigate existing situations or problems • Provide solutions to problems • Explore and analyze more general issues • Construct or create new procedures or systems • Explain new phenomenon • Generate new knowledge • ...or a combination of any of the above! 1.3 Types of Research 1. Descriptive Research Descriptive research focuses on describing the state of affairs, situations, or phenomena as they exist at present. It answers the question "What?" without the need for a hypothesis. This type of research is often used to understand the frequency or preferences of people regarding a specific subject. Example: Determining the frequency of shopping or identifying which product flavor people like the most. 2. Analytical Research Analytical research critically examines available facts, data, and information to find answers to questions such as "How?" and "Why?". Unlike descriptive research, it requires a hypothesis to explore the reasons behind observed phenomena. Example: Investigating why a particular product flavor is most preferred or analyzing the preferences of different age groups.
