Unit 6: VIETNAMESE LIFESTYLE: THEN AND NOW Test 1 Olivia: Grandma, could you tell me how life today is different from when you were young? Grandma: Of course, dear. When I was your age, entertainment was very different. We used to spend most of our time playing hopscotch and skipping rope in the streets. We didn't have any expensive toys. Olivia: That's quite different from now. Most kids spend their free time on smartphones and video games. Grandma: Yes, though not everyone. In smaller towns, children still enjoy traditional games. Olivia: I see. Grandma: Also, young people today have much more freedom in how they express themselves. In my day, we had strict rules about what to wear. Now teenagers can choose their own style. Olivia: That's true, Grandma! Grandma: And education was very different too. Many of my friends had to quit school early to help their families earn money. Schools were few and far between. Olivia: So we have better educational opportunities now? Grandma: Absolutely. You have so many more choices and possibilities. Olivia: Would you say these changes are positive? Grandma: On the whole, yes. Life has become much more comfortable and convenient. Olivia: Thanks for sharing, Grandma. Test 2 Learning styles have changed a lot in recent years. In the past, students just sat quietly and listened to teachers. They wrote down everything the teacher said and memorized it. There wasn't much discussion in class. Now, learning is more interactive. Students work together in groups and share their ideas. Many teachers use pictures, videos, and games to make lessons more interesting. Students can also use computers and tablets to learn. Another big change is homework. Before, students only did exercises from books. Today, they do different kinds of projects. They make presentations, do research, and solve problems in creative ways. Teachers give more feedback to help students improve. They don't just give marks - they explain what students did well and what they need to work on. Students can also learn at their own speed and choose topics they like. These changes help make learning more enjoyable and useful for students. I'll create 3 different tasks to test comprehension of this passage about changing learning styles: Task 1: Multiple Choice 1. In the past, how did students mainly learn? a) Through group work b) By listening and memorizing c) Using computers d) Through discussions 2. What do modern teachers use to make lessons interesting? a) Only textbooks b) Only computers c) Pictures, videos, and games d) Only homework 3. How has homework changed? a) It's been eliminated b) It's only from books now c) It's become more project-based d) It's only online
Task 2: True/False/Not Mentioned Decide if these statements are True, False, or Not Mentioned: 1. Modern students never work alone. False 2. Teachers now give detailed feedback to students. True 3. All schools use tablets for learning. Not Mentioned 4. Students can learn at their own pace now. True 5. Past teachers never used visual aids. Not Mentioned Task 3: Complete the Sentences Fill in the gaps with information from the text: 1. In the past, students wrote down everything and ___memorized____ it. 2. Modern learning is more ___interactive____. 3. Today's students make ____presentations___, do ____research___, and solve problems creatively. 4. Teachers don't just give marks - they explain what students did _well_ and what they need to _work _ on. Test 3 When I started college, I had to change the way I study completely. In high school, I just listened to teachers and wrote down everything they said. Now, things are different. I've learned to be more active in my learning. I make sure I study new topics for at least 30-45 minutes at a time. Then, I spend 5-10 minutes every day reviewing what I learned. This helps me remember things better. I also use different study methods now. I highlight important information in my textbooks and make my own notes. When I learn new words, I say them aloud to practice pronunciation. I often work in study groups too, which helps me understand difficult topics. The most important change is that I now plan my study time carefully. I have a weekly schedule for studying new material and a daily routine for revision. This new way of learning takes more effort, but it really works better for me. I'll create 3 different tasks to test comprehension of this passage about changing study habits: Task 1: Multiple Choice 1. How did the student study in high school?
