INTRODUCTION: Democracy is a system where the power to make decisions is given to the people. It means that every person has the right to vote and have a say in how their country is governed. In a democratic society, leaders are chosen through elections, and the laws are made for the benefit and consent of the people. It promotes equality, freedom, and the protection of individual rights. 2. MEANING OF DEMOCRACY:
It is the combination of two words krates and Demo. Demo means people and krates means power. So it can be known as the power of people. 3. DEFINITION OF DEMOCRACY: ❖ According to Aristotle: “In democracy the rule and sovereignty is in the hands of a group of people.” 4. KINDS OF DEMOCRACY: There are several kinds of democracy, each with its own variations and characteristics. I. Direct Democracy: In this form of democracy, citizens participate directly in decision-making processes. They have the power to propose, discuss, and vote on laws and policies themselves, without relying on elected representatives. Direct democracy is typically practiced in small communities or through referendums. II. Representative Democracy: Also known as indirect democracy, representative democracy is the most common form of democracy in the modern world. Citizens elect representatives to make decisions on their behalf. These elected officials, such as members of parliament or congress, represent the interests of their constituents and are accountable to them. III. Parliamentary Democracy: This form of democracy features a representative legislature where members of parliament are elected by the people. The parliament then chooses a government led by a prime minister or a similar executive figure. IV. Presidential Democracy: In this system, citizens elect a president as the head of state and head of government. The president is separate from the legislature and is usually elected through a direct vote.
