Global warming is the phenomenon of a gradual increase of the Earth's average temperature due to the rise of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These gases like carbon dioxide and methane escape into the air and act like a warm blanket over the Earth to prevent some of the heat from escaping into space, which keeps our planet warm enough for plants, animals and humans to live in. This is known as the greenhouse effect. However, there's a problem when people all over the world are adding extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels like oil and coal for our everyday and industrial activities. Global warming leads to some serious changes on Earth. For example, the sea levels are rising. Every year, the sea rises another 13 inches (3.2 mm.). This is mostly due to a combination of melted water from glaciers and ice sheets and thermal expansion of seawater as it warms. The rising sea levels have a profound impact on our oceans and marine life. They are changing the distribution of fish stocks and their food. The rising sea levels can also have devastating effects on coastal habitats farther inland with destructive erosion, wetland flooding, soil contamination with salt and habitat loss for fish, birds and plants. Using less fossil fuel to limit the amount of carbon released to the air is considered as the best way to slow down global warming. However, it is hard to do as our modern life mainly relies on non- renewable energy. Therefore, by driving less, turning down the heat and air conditioning, and using more solar, wind and hydroelectric power, we can all reduce greenhouse gases and help fight global warming. . Question 26. What is the main idea of paragraph 1? A. Effects of global warming B. Solutions to global warming C. Causes of global warming D. Current situations of global warming Question 27.
