MN2177 Core management concepts 4 to qualify it in this way (i.e. to briefly note how the example is limited in the context). Other times, you might decide to use an example that disproves a theory. 4. Responding to the context of the question with relevant theories, tools and techniques In Section B, but also to a lesser degree Sections A and C, we routinely provide a context. In the case of Section B, this is a case study. In Sections A and C, this might be a type of organisation or situation, for example, asking you how management science is relevant to the contemporary service firm (Zone B, Summer 2021). We want to see that you can apply the theory and knowledge you have gleaned in this module to the context given. This is about linking what the context you have been asked about to the theories, tools and techniques that you have learnt in Core Management Concepts. Answering a Section B question without properly making reference to the evidence and context of the case will lose you marks. Answering a question by focusing entirely on the theory without working in the given context will also lose you marks. Balance between the two is critical: theory in the given context is what we are looking for. 5. Spending an appropriate amount of time and word count on each question This is another obvious and oft-quoted recommendation, but it is the one which works most fundamentally. In this exam, it simply means spending 45 minutes on Section A, 45 minutes on Section B, and 90 minutes on Section C (45 minutes on each question you choose to answer from Section C). While it is possible to get a borderline pass on this subject by missing out a sub- part, you would need to answer them very well. The best strategy is to split your time as it should be split. This is because the first 50% of the marks are easier to gain than the latter 50%.. It takes a great deal more work to get from 15 out of 25 to 17 out of 25, than it does to gain the first 10 marks for a 25 mark question. This equal splitting of time is the most more sensible exam strategy. Moreover, in Section B, where the marks will be variously distributed between a number of components, you will want to split your word count proportionately between the sections. Overweighting a question with less marks in terms of word count and underweighting a question with more marks in terms of word count means that you are performing out of sync with other candidates and your work will look weak on the underweighted answers as a result. 6. Giving your answers to Section C an effective structure There are a range of actions you should take to organise your Section C answers that will help the examiners to see what you are trying to do and award you marks accordingly. a. Write an introduction: Introductions are most effective when they demonstrate how you intend to answer the question. The examiner intuitively knows what you are planning to do and can then read your answer looking for this clear, logical structure.
