Spending money Point 1: - Three age groups: + young people + families + (1) _______adults/ mature people_______ Point 2: Male and female (2) _____spending patterns_____ Three age groups are: + young people aged (3) _______30_______ + Families aged from 33-50 + Mature adults (4) _______(over) 55_______ TRANSCRIPT Good evening everyone. This evening I'm going to continue last week's lecture by talking more about how people spend their money. First of all, I'm going to compare how people of different age groups spend their cash. You probably know that there's a lot of difference between what young people do with their money, how families spend their money, and what more mature people do. Secondly, I want us to think about what we imagine men and women spend their money on. And then, I'm going to look at male and female spending patterns and see whether we were right. Okay, to start with, let's divide the population into three sections. Let's say young people up to the age of 30 in the first group. Then, let's put families in the 30 to 55-year-old group. So that puts adults over 55 in the
2 mature group. Does that make sense? For questions 5-7, listen to the next part of the recording carefully and answer the question. Select THREE correct options from the list (a-g). What do families spend their money on? a furniture and household goods b clothes, music and entertainment c cars and outings d electronic equipment e gardening tools f food, toys and outings g cars and travelling (5) _______F_______ (6) _______A_______ (7) _______D_______ TRANSCRIPT Right, well, I found that the first group, that's young people up to the age of 30, mostly spend their money on clothes, music, and entertainment. That's not really very surprising, is it? Although I must admit, I thought they might spend a lot on cars and travelling around. So, the next group is what I've called families, people in the age group from 30 to 55. Naturally, as I expected, this group spends most of its money on food, toys, and trips out. But I was surprised to find that people aged between 30 and 55 spend most of their money on furniture and kitchen equipment. I suppose it's logical if you think about it. People are usually improving their homes at that age, and household equipment is very expensive. But they also spend a lot of money on electronic equipment, like video games for the children. Now turning to the third group, that's people over 55. I thought they'd spend their money on gardening tools and electronic equipment, but I was wrong again. People in the over 55s group spend most money on new cars and days out. For questions 8-10, you will hear the last part of the recording. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS to answer the questions for eating in restaurants. 8. What do men spend twice as much as women on? cars and computers 9. What do women spend most on? beauty treatments 10. Which group spends most on eating in restaurants? young men
3 TRANSCRIPT So, what did we think about how men and women spend their money? Okay. Well, we thought that young women would spend a lot on clothes and shoes, and that young men would buy more electronic equipment and cars. Well, when we look at the figures, we can see that we were right about the men. Young men spend twice as much as women on cars and computers. But, and this is interesting, we were wrong about the women. I was surprised to find that young women spend much more on beauty treatments than they do on clothes and shoes. So, we'll have to think about that again. And there's another interesting fact about young women. It looks as though young women are much more concerned about their diet than men. We found that although young women don't spend as much as men on eating out, they do spend a lot more on organic foods than young men. 4 TRANSCRIPT WOMAN: In today's sporting world we have a racing driver with us. Simon Webster. Welcome Simon. Tell me at the age of twenty one do you find it helpful to talk to older drivers? SIMON: I do and they are happy to give advice if I need it. I always talk to drivers with more experience if I'm going to drive on a track I haven't raced on before. I try to get as much information as possible so I don't make any mistakes. WOMAN: You must get very tired. SIMON: Well we race at weekends and on Fridays we are getting everything ready but I usually only do a race every three weeks and not in the winter. We race from April to October. WOMAN: I see. And what's the hardest thing for you about being a racing driver? SIMON: I find it very difficult to take time off. I do go away on holiday probably not as often as I should but the mistake I always make before a race is to push my mind. I do have a chance for myself to keep training when really I should rest. When I train too much I'm tired when the race actually starts. The thing is I know I can continue to get better. WOMAN: What skills do you need to be a top racing driver? SIMON: You do need to know a certain amount about how the car works but other people will check the car for you. When you're actually racing it helps to be a tiny bit frightened as it means you really pay attention. That's really important. If you stop concentrating it could be very dangerous. WOMAN: A lot of small boys are keen on cars. How did you get interested? SIMON: My friends were all more interested in football but my dad did a bit of racing. I started going to racetracks with him. As soon as he let me try he realised I would be good at it and wanted me to succeed. I know it's really popular now with kids who watch it on TV but I never did. WOMAN: What about young racing drivers? What advice would you give them? SIMON: Some people say you should study and go to university first. The problem is if you do that you'll be too old when you have enough time. If you really want to be a top racing driver you need to train and get as fit as you can by going to the gym. Don't risk playing other sports because you might get injured. WOMAN: Well thank you very much for talking to us today. SIMON: Thank you. Part 3: For questions 16-20, you will hear a woman called Anne and a man called Peter talking about a college party. Decide if each sentence is correct or incorrect. If it is correct, put a tick (✔) in the box under A for YES. If it is not correct, put a tick (✔) in the box under B for NO. N° Statements A B
