MSTC 106: Measurement of Distance This discussion shows the different methods of measuring horizontal distances. 1. Pacing Before measuring horizontal distances, the pace factor should be calibrated. A pace is the distance between the toes or the heels of opposite feet after 1 step. On the other hand, a stride is the distance between the heel/two of the same foot after two paces. The pace factor is Pace Factor = Distance Paces 2. Taping This method usually uses a steel tape to measure precisely horizontal distances. Take note of the following additional units of measurement from this method. 1 tally = 10 pins In the metric system, 1 pin = 1 tape length In the English system, 1 pin = 100 links 1 link = 1 ft 1 perch = 1 rod = 16.5 feet 1 vara = 33 inches
