Passage 6: The Beginnings of Communication 1. Students are selected to read through this passage. 2. Complicated words or phrases are discussed by asking students if they know the word’s meanings. E.g., “What do you think ‘devising’ means?” Students are asked to write down notes and jot down unfamiliar word meanings or phrases. They are encouraged to use a dictionary for any other words they are not sure about. Words or phrases that might need further explaining: Communication The process of passing information and understanding from one person to another. It is a process of transmitting and sharing ideas, opinions, facts, values etc. from one person to another or one group to another. Devising Plan or invent something from careful thought. Amateur Someone who does something as a hobby and not as a job. Not a professional. Archaeologist A person who studies the past by looking for the remains and objects left by plants, animals and people who lived long ago. Extensive Covering or affecting a large area. Limestone A type of rock. Existed Lived (on). Isolated Far away from other places, buildings, or people. Artefacts Objects made by humans, typically one of cultural or historical interest. Evidence Anything that you see, experience, read, or are told that causes you to believe that something is true or has really happened. Prehistoric The time before recorded history or the invention of writing systems. Investigate To study by close examination (looking closely) and questioning. Pottery Pots, dishes, and other items made of fired clay. Idly Without any purpose. Dim Not shining brightly or clearly Bison A humpbacked shaggy-haired wild ox native to North America and Europe. Boar A wild pig with tusks. 3. Students are to complete the nine (9) multiple-choice questions after class. Textbook: Every second week, students are assigned some pages from their textbook to complete. Please note: It is very important that students DO NOT go ahead of the class and complete additional pages. These pages are to be completed during class (with any unfished work to be completed for homework). Students have the opportunity to ask questions and receive assistance from the teacher.
