2 MAN: We can't afford this kind of holiday, forget it. Gone are the days when we fitted money away on unnecessary things sumptuous chalets and expensive dinners. Now we have to make do with a few days at the beach. WOMAN: That's why I insist that we buy the caravan we saw the other day. It's prices unbeatable and you won't have to worry about sharing the toilet with my mother. MAN: That's reason enough to consider the option. WOMAN: You're unbearable anyway since summer is just around the corner. We have to make provisions. I mean, we have to make up our minds about what we're going to do in August. Are we buying the caravan and going to Cornwall? Or are we going to Greece? MAN: Greece? When did that come up? WOMAN: Listen carefully. If we buy a caravan, that means that it's going to set us back 8,000 pounds. Yet it will pay off in the long run. We won't have to pay for accommodation. We won't be forced to eat at restaurants during our holiday. We'll cook in the caravan. However, if we don't buy a caravan, which means if we don't spend 8,000 pounds, I guess we could go to Greece and visit a couple of islands. It's a must, believe me. MAN: Says who? WOMAN: Says me. Don't forget that we've never done anything for ourselves. MAN: Going to Greece has never been on the agenda as far as I remember. I know the kids would love to, but besides I've got a loan to pay off. WOMAN: It's 3,000 pounds. I know. But you said you're saving for it. You earned 5,000 last month. MAN: Demand for builders is on the wax and wane, so I can't really tell how much I earn every month. You know that. WOMAN: Do you want to stay here working while I'm in Greece with the kids? MAN: That's an option. WOMAN: So, you don't mind, do you? I'm sure you've got ulterior motive. MAN: Such as? WOMAN: We'll discuss it later. Now, as far as the caravan is concerned, I think it's the best solution as it's going to come in handy over the long haul, whether you like it or not. MAN: If we buy it, we'll need extra upkeep money.
3 WOMAN: Yes. But this course won't exceed 3 to 400 quid per year. MAN: Depends how often you'll need to holiday, darling. Some it won't be enough for you. Part 2: For the question 6-10, listen to a recording on three common misconceptions about growth mindset and complete the summary, using NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS for each answer. The term “growth mindset” has become increasingly popular, with its true definition being (6) ____distorted_____. When a growth mindset is promoted in companies, their employees become more encouraged and dedicated, and also receive greater (7)____organizational support_____for cooperation and innovation. Meanwhile, companies with a fixed mindset are prone to cheating and deception among employees. Due to people’s lack of awareness of growth mindset concepts, three misconceptions remain: Firstly, people hold the belief that they already have a growth mindset. They attribute having a growth mindset to being receptive, (8)____flexible_____,or optimistic. Yet, this is false because everyone is a mixture of growth and fixed mindsets, which develops overtime with experience. Secondly, people think that a growth mindset is only about rewarding their own efforts. However, it is essential for people to reward effort, learning, progress and to emphasize the processes that lead to these. Then, by (9) ____deeply engaging_____in such processes, people can achieve positive outcomes. Thirdly and finally, there is an opinion that just espousing a growth mindset can make good things happen. For example, organizations give employees mission statements with lofty values, such as growth, (10) ____empowerment_____, and innovation, yet they mean little to employees unless they are practical and attainable. TRANSCRIPT The term growth mindset has reached buzzword proportions, and its true meaning has become distorted. Research shows that people who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies, and input from others have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than people with a more fixed mindset, that is, those who believe their talents are innate gifts. When companies embrace a growth mindset, their employees feel more empowered and committed. They also receive greater organizational support for collaboration and innovation. In contrast, people at primarily fixed mindset companies report more cheating and deception among employees, most likely to gain an advantage in the talent race. But people have a limited grasp of growth mindset concepts. Here are three common misconceptions.
4 The first is the belief that you already have a growth mindset and always have. People often confuse a growth mindset with being flexible, open-minded, or with having a positive outlook. This is a false growth mindset. Everyone is a mixture of fixed and growth mindsets, and that mixture continually evolves with experience. We must acknowledge that a pure growth mindset doesn't exist to attain the benefits we seek. Another belief is that a growth mindset is just about praising and rewarding effort. But the truth is, outcomes matter. It's critical to reward not just effort, but learning and progress, and to emphasize the processes that yield these things, such as seeking help from others, trying new strategies, and capitalizing on setbacks to move forward effectively. Outcomes follow from deeply engaging in these processes. And third, people think that just a spouse in a growth mindset will make good things happen. For instance, organizations often think they embody a growth mindset by creating mission statements that include lofty values, like growth, empowerment, or innovation. But they mean little to employees if the company doesn't implement policies to make them real and attainable.
