SDH GENERAL GUIDELINES This document describes the general guidelines for creating Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. This type of subtitle is primarily intended to serve hearing-impaired viewers. 1. Maximum character limit ● 42 characters per line 2. Dialogue Format ● Mixed case characters 3. Positioning ● By default, subtitles should be positioned at the bottom of the screen, center justification ● Special cases: ○ Reposition up or top of the screen to avoid blocking of graphics and credits. ○ If subtitle covers the mouth of speaker, reposition to top of screen.

SDH GENERAL GUIDELINES 6. Line Breaks ● Proper line breaking follows: ○ Before conjunctions. Remember F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) ○ Before prepositions ○ Do not separate the following: ○ Noun from an article ○ Noun from its adjective ○ Verb from an auxiliary, reflexive pronoun or negation ○ Full first and last names Incorrect Correct 7. Punctuations ● Use grammatically correct punctuation. ● Use double hyphens for abrupt interruptions ● Use ellipses for trailing offs, significant pauses, subtitles that starts mid-sentence.
