Destination Taiwan Known for its night markets and friendly people, Taiwan’s capital of Taipei is so much more than meets the eye. With a complex historical background intertwined with mainland China and its civil war in the early 20th century, Taiwan’s modern history has seen many ups and downs throughout the decades, propelling it to a modern economic and cultural powerhouse. The home of the KMT government, Taiwan is often touted as harbouring ancient and traditional Chinese customs, as it was spared the ravages of the chaotic Cultural Revolution that occurred in mainland China in the 60’s and 70’s. With a mix of mainland Chinese, local aboriginal, and even Japanese culture, this city on what was formerly known as the Island of Formosa, has so much to offer anyone visiting who is looking for unique cultural, language, and culinary experiences. Through engaging with different traditions, customs, and values of Taiwan, participants will cultivate their character by developing empathy, adaptability, and a global perspective. By exploring aspects of other cultures, individuals also gain a deeper understanding of their own values and personal character. How will experiencing a different lifestyle enhance pupils’ understanding of the world around them? Through activities such as interacting with locals at night markets or learning about the long history of Taiwan, students will develop a deeper appreciation for diverse perspectives, gain intercultural communications skills, and gain a sense of responsibility towards global issues. COLLABORATION How can we view the world as a community and be active participants and advocates within it? Throughout the week, through our activities and intentional reflections, students will develop a deeper understanding of collaboration, as well as a deeper understanding of who they are, what they value, and how they can bring these learning outcomes to a team and work together.
