Engine Room Inspection 3 Confidential: For Dealer Use Only The need for inspection – Spark Plug Generally, the electrode part of the spark plug wears out as distance traveled increases (number of spark discharges). However, the rate of depletion is affected by running conditions (such as repeated high-load driving).
Engine Room Inspection 3 Confidential: For Dealer Use Only The need for inspection – Spark Plug ◇Reason for wearing and rounding of electrodes When voltage is applied between spark plug electrodes, the electric field is concentrated at the corners of the electrodes. The sparking is therefore concentrated at the corners of the electrodes, and this causes wearing and rounding. When the corners become rounded, sparks become difficult to discharge, causing misfires. Spark plugs with depleted electrodes and rounded corners must be replaced.
