1 Lesson 3 CROPPING, RESIZING, AND LAYERING INTRODUCTION Adobe Photoshop allows users to creatively and accurately adjust photos using methods such, as layering, resizing and cropping. Through cropping out elements from an image users can enhance composition. Emphasize important features. Resizing alters the dimensions of an image to meet design requirements without compromising quality. One of Photoshops features is layering, which empowers users to work on parts of an image separately and overlay elements, like text, graphics and effects in a non- destructive manner. Creating quality images involves carrying out a range of essential responsibilities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, students are able to: 1. Understand and apply image resolution concepts for different media. 2. Use Free Transform tools to manipulate images. 3. Manage and organize layers effectively for editing. 4. Recognize and apply layering techniques in Photoshop. LECTURE DISCUSSION IMAGE CROPPING Cropping is the removal of unwanted outer areas from a photographic or illustrated image. The process usually consists of the removal of some of the peripheral areas of an image to remove extraneous trash from the picture, to improve its framing, to change the aspect ratio, or to accentuate or isolate the subject matter from its background.
2 Crop tool in Photoshop indicated by a reversed square icon in most image editors. It displays 3x3 grid lines that can be moved according to your preferred part of a photograph. To crop the frame, you simply place the tool in the part of the image where you want to start the crop and drag it across. Once the selection is final, you must select the check icon located at the options bar. CROP AND SLICE TOOLS Crop Tool * (C) – to crop an image and remove unwanted areas. Uncheck “Delete Cropped Pixels” int the Options Bar to crop an image non-destructively Perspective Crop Tool (C) – to both crop an image and fix common distortion or perspective problems Slice Tool (C) – divides an image or layout into smaller sections (slices) which can be exported and optimized separately Slice Select (C) – to select individual slices created with the Slice Tool
3 Frame Tool * (K) – lets you place images into rectangular or elliptical shapes Photoshop has many tools you can use to crop, resize, flip, rotate, distort, and other way to transform your images. Other tools are grouped and hidden behind a tool. One of these is the Marquee (M). Marquee tool has rectangular, elliptical, single- row and single column option. To see other sub-tools, you can right-click to or press and hold the mouse button over the chosen tool. Elliptical Marquee tool enables the user to select part on an image with an ellipse shape, to easily change the sub-tool you are using, hold shift+ the letter assigned to the tool. Ex, Shift+M to change form rectangular and elliptical marquee tool. Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste the selected part of an image. IMAGE RESIZING There are plenty of reasons to resize images, the most common use of reducing the size of large files is to make it easier to upload online. Resizing can either be making your images smaller or larger. Making images smaller simply discards pixels, which can lead to loss of quality while excessive enlargement will produce fuzzy or pixelated pictures.
