A decimal number can be defined as a number whose whole number part and the fractional part is separated by a decimal point. The dot in a decimal number is called a decimal point. The digits following the decimal point show a value smaller than one. How would you read the number below in the Decimal Place Value Chart? 24 and 68 hundredths. Let’s look at question 1d). If we break down the number 32.42 with the help of the place value chart above. We can see that the value of the 3 is 3 tens and the value of the 2 is 2 units or 2 ones. Then we have the decimal point. After the decimal point the value of the 4 is 4 tenths and the value of the 2 is 2 hundredths.
4 Page 3 Decimals 2 Solution: Convert 2.4 metres to cm (100cm = 1m) Then, we divide 240 cm ÷10. Remember when dividing by 10 we move the decimal point one place to the left. Question 2 Ordering money from smallest to largest amount. Let’s practice putting these amounts in order from smallest to largest. $5.45 $2.79. $ 3.75. $9.89. $1.23 These decimals are to the hundredths place. Let’s find some of the decimals together. 0.42 is the same as 42 hundredths. 0.54 is the same as 54 hundredths. When completing questions 4 we can see that the first box, if we count up by 1 hundredth, will be 0.14.
