P a g e | 3 Post Graduate Diploma (Banking & Finance) Module 3 This module deals with: Introduction to CBS  Technology behind CBS.  Modules of CBS.  Operations of CBS Branch.  Security and Controls at Data Centre and Branch.  CBS functional training. Introduction Computers first made an entry into the banking industry with the initial attempt to automate certain back office applications like Payroll, Inter Branch Reconciliation (IBR), consolidation of weekly/ Friday statement, MIS generation, etc. Transaction processing in banking started with the advent of Ledger Posting Machines (LPMS), later reincarnated as Advanced Ledger Posting Machines (ALPMS). Recommendations of the Committee on Mechanisation and Bank Computerisation, headed by Dr. C Rangarajan (then Deputy Governor of RBI), paved the way for the planned computerisation process in banks. With the advent of the Local Area Network (LAN), computers got the capability to network and share resources. LAN made it possible to share data and computer resources among users. Applications were developed for processing data stored in a single computer called a file server. With this, banking automation took a new turn, paving the way for the development of Total Branch Automation /Mechanisation (TBA/ TBM) software application. Manual Ledgers started getting substituted with electronic records or data. The beginning of the liberalisation and globalisation era gave birth to many new generation private sector banks with state-of-the-art technology. Entry of new generation banks brought a realisation to adopt modern technology among state-run banks and other private sector banks. Wide Area Networking (WAN) revolutionised Information Technology by linking computers across the globe through communication networks. The Information Communication Technology (ICT) made it possible to transmit, share information data across the globe instantaneously using WAN and LAN. This paved the way for the development of centralised data processing. The file server is kept in a central location, and various branches and offices are connected through communication lines and share the same data. This is popularly known as Core Banking Solution (CBS).
P a g e | 4 Post Graduate Diploma (Banking & Finance) CBS brought boundary-less online computing, and the networked Branches enable the customer to operate and avail banking services from any branch. The introduction of technology-driven alternative delivery channels like Automatic Teller Machines (ATM), Internet banking, Cards, Point of Sale (POS) and mobile banking provided hassle-free banking services on a 24/7 basis. Technology behind CBS CBS- Core (Centralised Online Real-time Exchange) Banking Solution (CBS) is a network of branches, which enables Customers to operate their accounts and avail banking services from any branch of the Bank on the CBS network, regardless of where the customer maintains their account. This has further enabled the introduction of alternative delivery channels and many technology-based payments and settlement systems. Information technology has transformed the banking industry, and today there is no need for the customer to visit branches for opening an account and transacting. With the introduction of computerisation in the 1980s, Ledger Posting Machines today have developed into fully technology-driven services based on Core Banking Solutions. In the CBS environment, the branches and offices are networked to a centralised data server. The centralised server holding the database is accessed by the branches and is updated online in real time. The access to the data is controlled through different levels of users validated by user Identification and passwords. CBS Architecture:
