Loving God and Neighbor i Introduction True education shapes not only the intellect but also the heart and soul. This book, Treasuring Values Education in Everyday Life: Loving God and Neighbor, is designed to help Grade 8 students develop virtues that reflect Christ’s love while deepening their relationship with Him. By harmonizing Values Education (VE) and Christian Living Education (CLE), this book provides students with the moral and spiritual foundation needed to live a life of wisdom, responsibility, and faith. At the core of this book is Jesus, the perfect model of love and service, who calls us to love God with all our heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) reminds us that “Christian education... is intended to make men and women capable of living as children of God” (CCC 1653). Through each lesson, students will learn how to live out this calling by practicing virtue, making wise moral decisions, and serving others in their communities. Encountering Jesus Through the Lessons This book harmonizes VE and CLE in a Christ-centered approach. VE helps students grow in self-awareness, social responsibility, and moral decision-making, while CLE strengthens their faith and understanding of Christ’s teachings. Quarter 1: Growing in Faith and Christian Virtues • VE: Emotional Wisdom and Spiritual Growth • CLE: Foundational Topics – Understanding the Core Teachings of the Faith This quarter helps students develop emotional intelligence and moral integrity through self-awareness and spiritual reflection. They learn that true wisdom comes from following Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). The Catechism teaches that “the dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God” (CCC 1700). Through lessons on Salvation History, Christology, and the Church, students come to know Jesus as the source of all wisdom and truth. Quarter 2: Strengthening Family and Faith in Christian Living • VE: Family and Faith as Pillars of Strength • CLE: Spiritual Life – Deepening One’s Relationship with God through Prayer and Sacraments This quarter emphasizes the role of family and faith in shaping character. Just as Jesus lived in the Holy Family and grew in wisdom and grace (Luke 2:52), students
ii Treasuring Good Manners in Everyday Life - Grade 8 reflect on how their families and faith communities guide them in becoming responsible and loving individuals. The Catechism reminds us that “prayer is the life of the new heart” (CCC 2697), encouraging students to strengthen their relationship with God through prayer, sacraments, and devotion to the saints. Quarter 3: Living Christ’s Love Through Compassion and Responsibility • VE: Compassion and Social Responsibility • CLE: Moral Life – Christian Values, the Commandments, and the Beatitudes This quarter highlights the importance of kindness, fairness, and selflessness in our relationships with others. The Beatitudes teach us that “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7), reminding students that Christ calls us to serve others with love. The Catechism states that “the moral life is a response to God’s call” (CCC 1691), guiding students in making ethical choices and treating others with dignity and respect. Quarter 4: Serving God Through Civic Engagement and Environmental Stewardship • VE: Civic Engagement and Environmental Stewardship • CLE: Pastoral Life – Catholic Social Teachings and Community Service Students learn that being part of a community comes with the responsibility of serving others and caring for the environment. Jesus taught that “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). The Catechism states that “the human being is meant to live in society” (CCC 1879), emphasizing that active participation in social justice initiatives, such as Pondo ng Pinoy, Alay Kapwa, and parish involvement, is a way of living out one’s faith. Forming Disciples of Christ in Love and Service This book aims to help students develop virtues that reflect Christ’s love in their daily lives. Through VE, students learn how to manage emotions, build relationships, and make ethical decisions. Through CLE, they deepen their faith and grow in their understanding of Jesus’ teachings. Each lesson is an opportunity to love God and others through kindness, service, and moral integrity. With Jesus as their model, may every student who reads this book be inspired to live with love, serve with joy, and grow in holiness. As they treasure good manners and faith, may they always remember: Jesus walks with them, leading them toward a life of virtue and service.
