Think Tank AlterContacts Yearly Report 2024 Circularity for Sustainable Development The Hague The Netherlands
Think Tank AlterContacts Yearly Report 2024 2024 at a Glance In line with the priority focus areas of the 2024 High-Level Political Forum of the United Nations, Think Tank AlterContacts has dedicated its activities of this year to the exploration of the state of circular economy in Europe. In January, together with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), we co-hosted a side event to the UN ECOSOC Partnership Forum. Titled Circular Economy for SDGs: Inspiring Transformations Towards Sustainable, Resilient, and Innovative Solutions, it presented the circular economy as a holistic framework that reinforces the principles of the 2030 Agenda, addressing poverty eradication, resilience, and innovation in the face of multiple crises. As a follow-up to the event, AlterContacts coordinated the registration of the Kilometro Circular – Blue KmC2 Living Labs network as a United Nations recognized SDG Acceleration Action. The goal of the action was to enable less privileged communities to find the path to economic self-sufficiency through education on circular and regenerative practices, sustainable development, and its integration into their daily lives. Special attention was given to complex geographies such as rural, coastal, and remote locations. To support the mindset change necessary for the transition towards the circular economy, Bio Ocean Solutions Hub, the leading partner of Kilometro Circular, and Think Tank AlterContacts launched an educational and awareness-raising program on the circular economy. It was designed in collaboration with more than twenty universities from five continents and local circular enterprises. The objective was to boost innovation and entrepreneurship in the circular economy. Between December 2023 and September 2024 Think Tank AlterContacts experts carried out fieldwork in the coastal areas of Mediterranean Europe. In April 2024 with the support of the United Nations Volunteers platform, we recruited a team of volunteer researchers to conduct an academic research based on the findings from the field. As a result of this work, this report has been prepared under the title Towards Circular: Analysis of the Coastal Areas of Greece, Italy and Spain. It contains seventeen articles looking at the different aspects of sustainable development in coastal settlements through the lens of circular practices. It was officially released during the European Sustainable Development Week 2024. At the Conference “Ecological Crisis and Economic Impact” in November at the Acropolis Museum, Athens, we presented the insights from the report to the national and regional policymakers of Greece. In line with the research, AlterContacts was awarded an ERASMUS+ grant for the project Circular Competence Training for Aquaculture Waste Management using VR 2
