UDFs Guide (MM) tr(eqn,dx,dy,tx,ty): for original equationeqn y = f (x)(this UDF only works with variables x and y), dilates by d x from the x-axis and d y from the y-axis, then translates by t x units in the +x-direction and t y units in the +y-direction, finds new equation after transformation Note 1: If there is no dilation for d x or d y, use a factor of 1. If there is no translation for t x or t y, use a value of 0. Reflections are equivalent to multiplying the dilation factor by -1 (i.e. for reflection in the x-axis, multiply d x by -1). Note 2: Dilations are applied before translations. If translations occur first in the problem, multiply the translation by the corresponding dilation factor (t x would be multiplied by d y, and t y would be multiplied by d x). See Example 2. Ex. 1. The graph of y = 2(x−1)2+3 is dilated from the x-axis by a factor of 1 2 , reflected in the y-axis, translated 3 unitsin the +x-direction, and translated 1 unitin the +y-direction. Find the equation of the resulting graph. The equation is y = x 2 −4x + 13 2 . Ex. 2. The graph of y = x 4 is translated 2 units to the right, dilated by a factor of 1 2 from the y-axis, and reflected in the x-axis. Find y ′ . The image under the transformation is y ′ = −16(x ′ −1)4 .
