SSLC English Unit 1 – Lesson 3 “Friends, Romans, Countrymen...” (Speech in Blank Verse) William Shakespeare
Blank Verse: Blank Verse is a style of verse or poetic form. Blank Verse lines do not rhyme each other and are usually written in Iambic Pentametre. Iambic Pentametre: Each iambic pentameter line has ten syllables in an unstressed–stressed pattern. It creates a natural and serious tone. For example: 1 2 3 4 5 Friends, Ro- | mans, coun- | trymen, | lend me | your ears. Antony's speech is a powerful example of Shakespeare's use of blank verse filled with verbal irony. © English Eduspot
