Year 2 Maths – 2030b Term 4 2024 Week 7 Notes The unit of measurement for Mass (or weight) is grams and kilograms. Mass measures how heavy or light something is. Do you know your own mass? 1 kilogram is 1000x heavier than 1 gram • Grams (g) is used to measure a lighter mass such as a tray of eggs, a box of chocolate, a tin of tea or coffee. Make an intelligent guess on the mass of each item. They should be in grams. • Kilogram (kg) is used to measure a heavier mass such as you and me!
I am a big adult. Guess my mass : it must be in Kilograms. Example 1 Which parcel has the greatest mass? Can you think of something that weighs around 9kg? Which has the lightest mass? What is the difference in mass between E and C? • Would it help to convert each parcel into grams first? Remember that 1kg = 1000g. • E weighs ______g and C weighs ______g . • Find the difference between the 2 parcels.
What is the correct unit of measurement for the mass of a boy or girl? Should you be using kg or g? Some challenging questions for extra homework:
Mary has a dozen eggs. Each egg is 30g. What is the total weight for all the eggs? What does “a dozen” mean? I dozen eggs = 12 eggs Form the correct equation for this question. Which maths symbol should you use? : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9uyyM4xLn0 Which is heavier? One kg of steel or one kg of feathers? • It doesn’t matter that steel in itself is heavier than feathers. • They are both 1 kg in mass in this case. • As long as their mass in kg is the same, one is not heavier than the other. • Size does not matter here. A piece of magnet that weight 1kg can fit easily into the size of your palm, but it is still the same mass as a big bag of feathers. • The feathers will definitely take up more space even if it is compressed into a bag, but as long as its mass or fatness inside the bag weighs 1 kg, it is still as heavy as the piece of steel or 2 blocks of Toblerone Chocolates that weigh 500g each!
