The New York City Department of Education COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION IN SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Teacher Dictation Copy SAMPLE TEST General Directions Before the start of the examination period, distribute one Test Booklet, face up, to each student. After each student has received a Test Booklet, distribute one Answer Document and one Part 4 Response Booklet to each student. Then instruct students to fill in the information on the front of the Part 4 Response Booklet. After each student has filled in the information on the Part 4 Response Booklet, students may begin the examination. Note: It is up to test administrators and test coordinators at your school to determine the best time within the administration window to begin administering the Part 2/Listening section. Directions for Part 2A: Instruct students to open their Test Booklets to Part 2A and read the directions. After students have read and understood the directions, say: There are eight questions or incomplete statements in Part 2A. Each question is based on a short passage, which will be read aloud to you. Listen carefully. Before each passage, you will hear background information in English once. Then you will hear the passage in Chinese. After you have heard the passage for the second time, you will hear the question in English once. The question is also printed in your Test Booklet. After you have heard the question, you will have about thirty seconds before hearing the next passage and question. During that time, read the question and the four answer options in your Test Booklet. Choose the best option, and record your response on your Answer Document. Base your answer on the content of the passage only. You should not read the question and answer options while you are listening to the passage. This will allow you to give all your attention to what you hear. We will now begin. Read the directions on the cover of your Test Booklet. (Pause). For Parts 2 and 3, use a #2 pencil to fill in your responses on your Answer Document. For Parts 4A and 4B, use only black or blue ink to record your responses in your Part 4 Response Booklet. SAMPLE
SAMPLE TEST -2- Administer each of the items in Part 2A as follows: First, read the setting in English once: then read the listening comprehension stimulus (passage) in Chinese twice in succession. Make every effort to read the passage in the way students would hear it in an authentic setting. Then read the question or incomplete statement once.
