PHƯƠNG PHÁP Để có thể làm được dạng câu hỏi đồng - trái nghĩa một cách hiệu quả cần có sự kết hợp 2 yếu tố: Vốn từ vựng tốt: Là dạng câu hỏi thiên về từ vựng nên hiển nhiên là ai trang bị được cho mình một vốn từ vựng dồi dào sẽ có lợi thế. Việc biết nghĩa của từ được cho trong câu hỏi từ trước sẽ giúp tìm đáp án đúng, nhanh chóng và chính xác. Kỹ năng suy luận từ ngữ cảnh của câu đề: - Trong một số trường hợp, từ được cho trong câu hỏi sẽ là một từ khó, ít thông dụng. Khi đó phải dựa vào việc suy luận được ý nghĩa của từ được cho từ ngữ cảnh của câu đề để tìm được đáp án đúng, hoặc ít nhất là loại bớt được các khả năng. - Chú ý đến liên từ (conjunction) cũng như các cụm từ nối (linking words), vì nhờ vào những từ này, ta có thể thấy được quan hệ logic giữa các ý trong câu, trong đoạn (đối lập nhau, ý sau bổ sung thông tin cho ý trước, ý sau là hệ quả của ý trước,.).

Nếu chỉ đơn giản là dựa vào vốn từ vựng mà không đọc kỹ câu đề thì rất dễ chọn sai nếu hấp tấp. - Vậy đọc câu trên, làm sao ta biết "common" mang nghĩa gì? Hãy chú ý đến từ "different" và liên từ "but", "different" có nghĩa là "khác biệt" còn liên từ "but" (nhưng) lại dùng để diễn tả sự đối lập, ngược nghĩa —> Vì vậy, có thể suy luận được rằng "common" ở đây sẽ có nghĩa trái ngược với different common = giống nhau, chung (>< khác biệt) = shared (>< different) —> Phương án C là đáp án đúng! A. pursue B. understand C. support D. obey - Trong ví dụ trên, nếu chỉ đơn giản là chọn theo hiểu biết về từ vựng thì rất nhiều bạn sẽ chọn ngay đáp án là A. pursue, vì "follow" có nghĩa rất thông dụng là "đi theo", rất gần với nghĩa của "pursue" là "theo đuổi, truy đuổi". Nhưng đừng quên rằng follow, cũng như rất nhiều từ thông dụng khác trong tiếng Anh, có rất nhiều nghĩa khác nhau trong những ngữ cảnh khác nhau. Kết luận ngay rằng "follow" ở đây gần nghĩa nhất với "pursue" là một điều không nên. - Để tìm câu trả lời chính xác, ta phải đọc thật kỹ toàn bộ câu đề: ► The first chapter of the textbook was quite easy —> Chương đầu tiên của giáo trình khá dễ ► But I found it extremely difficult to follow the content of the other chapters, even after hours of reading and thinking. —> Nhưng tôi lại gặp khó khăn trong việc follow nội dung của các chương khác. - Khi đã hiểu được nội dung như trên, thì hãy thử nghĩ xem liệu cho rằng follow ở đây có nghĩa là "đi theo" hay "truy đuổi, theo đuổi" thì có hợp lý không? Làm sao lại có thể "đi theo" nội dung của một chương trong một quyển giáo trình được? Như vậy, chọn A là hoàn toàn không đúng. - Mặt khác, từ nghĩa của câu, ta có thể suy luận rằng "follow" ở đây sẽ mang nghĩa thiên về "hiểu được, nắm được" (chương đâu của giáo trình thì dễ —> nhưng những chương sau lại có nội dung rất khó hiểu.). Như vậy, B sẽ là đáp án hợp lý nhất. (C và D loại vì support = ủng hộ còn "obey" = tuân lệnh).
