STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE SOPSM1112, Usage of Needlestick Resistant Gloves SOPSM1112 Rev. 4.0, Date:18/01/2023, Page 2 of 7 1 Purpose The purpose of this SOP is to provide information on the safe usage of Needlestick/ Puncture Resistant Gloves (NRG) to protect the hands from any injuries related to sharp objects while handling domestic, and infectious waste. AFS must adhere with HMC infection control protocol and guideline where applicable for usage. 2 Scope This SOP shall apply to the applicable premise in HMC where the use of NRG is not restricted by HMC infection control, under the scope of Acciona Facilities Services. 3 Abbreviation and definition Term Stand for PPE Personal Protective Equipment PTW Permit to Work TBT Toolbox Talk SDS Safety Data Sheet (SDS) - is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity, and environmental) and how to work safely with the Material/ product. It also contains information on the use, storage, handling, and emergency procedures related to the hazards of the material. Cleaning Cleaning – is the physical removal of foreign material, i.e., bloody and body substances, dust, dirt, debris, spillages, etc. from a surface or defined area. Disinfection Disinfection – is the thermal or chemical process of inactivating microorganisms on inanimate objects. COSHH Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), is a set of regulations put in place to protect workers from ill health when working with specific substances and materials. STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE SOPSM1112, Usage of Needlestick Resistant Gloves SOPSM1112 Rev. 4.0, Date:18/01/2023, Page 3 of 7 4.2 Tools and Equipment N/A 4.3 Consumables Antibacterial all-purpose cleaner Detergent Available on site: SDS COSHH Assessment 4.4 Responsibilities 4.4.1 Operation Manager Ensure the site has the required quantity and sizes of NRG Issue the NRGs to waste management team/cleaners who will handle/collect the domestic and infectious waste and maintain a record of issuance. NRGs which are misplaced or lost shall be charged to the end user at cost price and deducted from the salary. Ensure staff are wearing NRG while collecting/handing the domestic and infectious waste contained within the waste bin as well as clinical sharp boxes. Must coordinate with the site infection control and adhere to the guideline and protocol Disciplinary action to be taken for staff in violation of this SOP (SOPSM1112). 4.4.2 Supervisor Supervisor to ensure staff receives NRG as per the required size and signs the PPE issuance list. Give the briefing to Housekeeping staff on the safe removal of domestic and infectious waste from the waste bins and clinical sharps boxes Ensure staff is wearing NRGs while collecting/handling domestic and infectious waste. If any staff is found in violation of this SOP (SOPSM1112), report it to Operation Manager. 4.4.3 Cleaner Ensure the NRG is in good condition before use and report any damage. Wear NRG while collecting/handling domestic, infectious waste. Use the NRG in accordance with clause 5.3 and return it at end of the shift for washing as per clause 5.5. Must be aware of the needle prick procedure. Refer to policy “CL 7251”. Report any discomfort and/or damage or loss to the Supervisor. 5 Work Procedure 5.1 Obtaining Gloves All cleaners involved in waste collection in high and medium-risk areas and unrestricted areas by HMC infection control will be issued NRG gloves. Cleaners must wear the gloves safely as per the SOP and not use them for any other purpose. Such as cleaning surfaces, handling equipment Etc.

Wear inner disposable surgical gloves first, then wear NRG. Fit the gloves by tightening the strips (Type B only). Wash hands Wear latex gloves Then don NRG (Type A) Wash hands Wear latex gloves Then don NRG (Type B) Tighten the Velcro strip Table 3 Wearing NRG (Type A and Type B) 5.2.1 How to prevent needle prick injuries in the workplace? Always wear NRG while handling domestic and infectious waste. Always beware of the possibility of sharp objects inside (black, yellow, and red coloured) waste bags as well as clinical sharps boxes Always collect the bin liner from the top end and tie it. Do not touch the waste or compress/press the bag, even when wearing NRG. While transferring the bin liner to the waste trolley, hold it from the top and carry it at chest level at 1 arm’s distance from your body, to prevent contact with the upper or lower body (such as thighs or knees) Do not rush while collecting the waste. Please note the use of needle/puncture resistant gloves must be in accordance with the correct waste handling procedures and does not eliminate the risk of needle pricks, if user does not follow SOP and training guidelines.
