ANIMAL TESTING An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing. Proponents of animal testing say that it has enabled the development of many life- saving treatments for both humans and animals, that there is no alternative method for researching a complete living organism, and that strict regulations prevent the mistreatment of animals in laboratories. Opponents of animal testing say that it is cruel and inhumane to experiment on animals, that alternative methods available to researchers can replace animal testing, and that animals are so different from human beings that research on animals often yields irrelevant results. Animal testing contributes to life-saving cures and treatments: Animal research has contributed to major advances in treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, e.g. Animal testing is cruel and inhumane: Animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, food and water deprivation, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies. o proponent /prəˈpəʊnənt/ (n) = a person who supports an idea or course of action: người ủng hộ ... o life-saving treatment = treatment that sustains the life of a patient: phương pháp điều trị cứu sống người bệnh o alternative /ɔːlˈtɜːrnətɪv/ (adj) = that can be used instead of something else: thay thế o opponent (n) = a person who is against something: người phản đối ... o inhumane /ˌɪnhjuːˈmeɪn/ (adj) = not caring about the pain or problems of other people or animals; very cruel: vô nhân đạo o to experiment /ɪkˈsperɪment/ (v) = to try something in order to discover what it is like or find out more about it: thử nghiệm o to yield irrelevant results: cho ra các kết quả không liên quan o to contribute to something = to be one of the reasons why something happens: góp phần tạo ra/đưa tới ... o to subject something to something = to make something experience, suffer or be affected by something, usually something unpleasant: làm cho ai đó/thứ gì đó chịu đựng điều gì o infliction /ɪnˈflɪkʃn/ (n) = the act of making somebody/something suffer something unpleasant: việc bắt ai đó/thứ gì đó phải chịu đựng điều gì Source: https://animal-testing.procon.org/ SYNONYMS o Proponents of ... >< Opponents of ... o animal testing » animal research
