38 ANATOMY OF FLOWERING PLANTS EXERCISE – 2: Previous Year Questions 1. Match List-I with List-II. (NEET 2021) List-I List-II A. Cells with active cell division capacity (i) Vascular tissues B. Tissue having all cells similar in structure and function (ii) Meristematic tissue C. Tissue having different types of cells (iii) Sclereids D. Dead cells with highly thickened walls and narrow lumen (iv) Simple Select the correct answer from the options given below. A. B. C. D. (a) (ii) (iv) (i) (iii) (b) (iv) (iii) (ii) (i) (c) (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (d) (iii) (ii) (iv) (i) Ans. (a) Sol. -Meristematic tissue- Growth in plants is largely restricted to specialised regions of active cell division called meristems. Plants have different kinds of meristems: Apical meristem (root and shoot), lateral meristem and intercalary meristem. -A simple tissue is made of only one type of cell. The various simple tissues in plants are parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma. -The complex tissues are made of more than one type of cells and these work together as a unit. Xylem and phloem constitute the complex tissues in plants -The sclereids are spherical, oval or cylindrical, highly thickened dead cells with very narrow cavities (lumen). These are commonly found in the fruit walls of nuts; pulp of fruits like guava, pear and sapota; seed coats of legumes and leaves of tea. 2. Match List-I with List-II. (NEET 2021) List-I List-II A. Lenticels (i) Phellogen B. Cork cambium (ii) Suberin deposition C. Secondary cortex (iii) Exchange of gases D. Cork (iv) Phelloderm Choose the correct answer from the options given below A. B. C. D. (a) (iv) (i) (iii) (ii) (b) (iii) (i) (iv) (ii) (c) (ii) (iii) (iv) (i) (d) (iv) (ii) (i) (iii) Ans. (b) Sol. Phellogen or cork cambium is a thick layer. It is made of narrow, thin-walled and nearly rectangular cells. Phellogen cuts off cells on both sides. The outer cells differentiate into cork or phellem. The cork is impervious to water due to suberin deposition in the cell wall. The inner cells of cork cambium differentiate into secondary cortex or phelloderm. The cells of secondary cortex are parenchymatous. At certain regions, the phellogen cuts off closely arranged parenchymatous cells on the outer side instead of cork cells. These cells soon rupture the epidermis, forming a lens shaped openings called lenticels. They permit the exchange of gases between the outer atmosphere and the internal tissue of the stem. 3. Select the correct pair. (NEET 2021) (a) Large colorless empty cells in the epidermis of grass leaves– Subsidiary cells (b) In dicot leaves, vascular bundles are surrounded by large thick-walled cells– Conjunctive Tissue (c) Cells of medullary rays that form part of cambial ring– Interfascicular Cambium (d) Loose parenchyma cells rupturing the epidermis and forming a lens shaped opening in bark– Spongy parenchyma
