You can find instructions on using Phrase here: Phrase Instructions Localization Instructions Localizing Offensive Phrases: Focusing on Intent in the Target Language When localizing offensive phrases, the goal is to localize the original text’s effect in a way that makes sense culturally, socially, and emotionally. Always translate with awareness of both the source culture’s intent and the target audience’s values. This often means capturing the tone, impact, and social function of the phrase—whether it’s meant to insult, provoke, stereotype, or shock—rather than its literal meaning. Challenges to Localizing Offensive Language

A direct translation may miss the intended impact or, worse, offend in a way the original did not intend. 2. Lack of Equivalents: Some phrases rely on cultural references, historical context, or wordplay that has no direct counterpart in the target language. This can make it difficult to preserve nuance. Strategies for Localizing Offensive Language 1. Focus on function, not form. 2. Use Cultural Equivalents: If there’s not a good equivalent to a word or phrase, substitute with a word/phrase that has a similar social weight in the target culture. This helps preserve the emotional impact. 3. When localizing metaphorical language, aim to use equivalent expressions in the target language that reflect the original intent and emotional impact of the source while ensuring the result sounds natural and fluent. Examples and Tips on Localizing Offensive Language 1. Always focus on the underlying meaning/intent of the English text. Localization of intent and emotional impact of the text should always be the most important factor to consider. a. Rhymes: If the source text contains a rhyme, and there is no way to preserve the rhyme while also fully preserving the meaning/intent, opt to localize without the rhyme. Do not sacrifice meaning/intent in order to achieve a particular language feature in the localization.

This content is for internal use only b. Puns & Metaphors: Puns, metaphors, and other similar language features should be treated the same way as rhyming. If you cannot preserve the meaning/intent/emotional impact while also implementing the stylistic effect from the source text, then you should prioritize localization of meaning/intent/emotional impact, if possible. c. Leaving Source Text: If there’s some text that must remain in the target language, e.g. translating part of the text would result in loss of meaning, then leave the necessary English in the target translation. For Example: Meme Text: English is challenging. It can be learned. Through tough thorough thought, though. The underlying meaning, intent, and emotional impact of this text: This meme is joking that English is hard to learn because it has so many letters/letter strings that are exactly the same but have multiple different pronunciations. In this example, you would translate “ENGLISH IS CHALLENGING. IT CAN BE LEARNED” into your target language and then leave “THROUGH TOUGH THOROUGH THOUGHT, THOUGH.” in English, as translating this part would remove the original meaning from the source text. You would not want to localize “English” into the target language (as in d), as this would become too complicated when attempting to transfer the meaning to the
