Episode IV: A New Hope Primary source: oohteedee's 2019 "Special Edition Regrade" Secondary sources: oohteedee's "D+77" (v2.4); TeamNegative1's "4K77" (v1.4); HAL 9000's "A New Hope: Custom Special Edition”; Adywan's "A New Hope: Revisited" Visual Changes: • New color-grade throughout, (using oohteedee’s as a starting point) • Added layer of film grain throughout • 2019 Special Edition 20th Century Fox logo, with 1977 Original Theatrical Lucasfilm logo • Increased vibrance of the colored text from the Lucasfilm logo, the “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." text, and the opening crawl. Changed the shade of blue in the Special Edition end credits to look closer to the theatrical version. • Updated crawl with "Episode IV: A New Hope" added • Special Edition expanded shot, panning down from Tatooine sunset • Special Edition updated Jawa sandcrawler shot • Original no CGI rocks in front of R2-D2 • Special Edition Landscape establishing shot of Ben's hut • Cut the two added Special Edition CGI shots in the stormtroopers and dewbacks scene, but kept the third shot with the CGI dewbacks in the background, rotoscoped the right one out, to be able to lengthen the shot to match the theatrical timing, by reversing the clip at the beginning, since the stormtrooper in the foreground is just standing there. Recreated the clock wipe transition from the Jawa sandcrawler to combine the two scenes, manually by rotoscoping, since the built-in Final Cut Pro clock wipe transition looked way too smooth and digital. The Theatrical, and even redone Special Edition, transitions here are way more “janky”, which oddly enough make it look more professional, and filmic. • Cut half of the new extended arrival to Mos Eisley scene. Cut the slapstick CGI droids, so that shot starts right when Luke’s speeder enters the frame. Removed the shot of the CGI Jawas falling off the ronto, and kept the theatrical shot without the giant ronto walking in front of and blocking the entire frame as the speeder pulls up to the stormtroopers • Original shot of stormtrooper saying "we don't need to see his identification”, without the added Special Edition CGI droid floating around • Special Edition dewback outside Cantina entrance • Updated Special Edition cantina aliens, except I included both Wolfman (Arleil Schous) from the theatrical version, AND the “Melas” alien from the Special Edition, by making a fill-the-frame transition that appears as if someone is walking in front of the camera, (just like the transition directly preceding the shot of Wolfman does), by using two angled wipe transitions with a few frames of dark brown in the middle, and splitting the duration of each of their shots in half. • Original "I don't like the look of this" scene, without CGI stormtrooper and dewback, but kept the SE dewback growl, and decreased the volume to make it sound like it's coming from the further away practical effect dewback in the background • Original Han shoots first (only) scene • Original shot of stormtrooper searching the street for the droids, without the added Special Edition CGI droid floating around • Removed the superfluous Special Edition Jabba and Han scene. It ruins the mystery of who and what this Jabba is that we keep hearing about, repeats the same dialogue that was just exchanged with Greedo, and it diminishes Jabba as a threat if Han can literally walk overtop of him. Not to mention the CGI is not great. Covered up the theatrical version cross-dissolve transition with a right-to-left wipe transition that follows the same type of wipe transition from the Jabba scene back to Obi-Wan and Luke walking in the Special Edition. • Special Edition added shot of Millennium Falcon leaving Mos Eisley • Decreased the saturation and brightness in the background of the shot of Han in the cockpit as they fly away from Mos Eisley, to mitigate noticing the continuity error of a mysterious green figure walking in the background, which turns out to be Alec Guinness with odd lighting, from the tail of a take from a later part of the film, even though Obi-Wan had just buckled himself in at the Dejarik table moments before • Re-color-graded the exterior shot of the Millennium Falcon in hyperspace to make the hyperspace tunnel a more vibrant blue, like it appears in the later films • Special Edition updated Alderaan explosion • Special Edition lightsaber color correction • Special Edition updated shots of the Millennium Falcon in the Death Star hanger • Original non-trimmed/censored shots of Imperial officers getting shot • Special Edition enhanced/extended detention cell corridor • 2019 Special Edition melted grate • Special Edition English controls text replaced by Aurebesh • Special Edition CGI trash compactor creature, but re-color graded it to look more realistic, and more closely match the lighting of the rest of the scene • Special Edition small hallway Han runs into replaced by large hanger full of stormtroopers • Millennium Falcon in hyperspace now shows the canonical blue hyperspace visuals outside of the windows instead of black space and static stars, by combining effects shots from HAL 9000's "Custom Special Edition" and Adywan's "A New Hope: Revisited", including the Falcon dropping out of hyperspace visual edit from HAL 9000 • Special Edition updated shots of the Millennium Falcon approaching Yavin • Special Edition re-added Biggs Darklighter and Luke reunion scene • Special Edition updated visual effects shots of X-Wing fighters • Special Edition updated Death Star explosion • Special Edition digitally inserted stand-in actors at medal ceremony Audio changes: The majority of the audio source is the 2019 UHD Blu-ray 5.1 surround sound mix from oohteedee's 2019 "Special Edition Regrade", unless switching to the theatrical version 5.1 audio track from "D+77” for the following parts: • The theatrical shot of Luke's speeder approaching the stormtroopers, without the ronto walking in the foreground • The portions of the cantina scene where there is only music and no dialogue. I prefer the sound of the original mix to the remastered version, and it includes the Wolfman alien's growl • The entire Han and Greedo scene, since “Maclunkey” and the added blaster shots needed to be removed • Stormtroopers checking the street for the droids, since it doesn't have the sound effect of the CGI droid that was cut out • Theatrical take of Obi-Wan saying "If the ship's as fast as he's boasting, we ought to do well", as it's a smoother transition than the different Special Edition take and audio timbre • Theatrical audio of Leia saying "it could be worse" in the trash compactor, since the Special Edition version has an odd sudden dip in volume, and again, for the same reason, right after Luke says "it just let go of me and disappeared" • Falcon in hyperspace scene, as the mix is better overall, and the SE also has odd sudden dips in audio volume at parts • Han and Luke talking in the Yavin IV hanger, as it is a better mix in the original Other Audio changes/selections: • Special Edition C-3PO additional line "We stopped" • Combined the scores of both the Theatrical and the Special Edition during the transition to the stormtroopers in the desert scene • Special Edition “Tell your uncle” Aunt Beru line • Overlayed both the original Obi-Wan's Krayt dragon call to ward off the Sand People, and the 2004 version. Re-timed/slowed the 2004 version ever so slightly to fit alongside the original better. • Added whirring sound effect from the 1977 mono mix when R2-D2 projects the hologram of Leia • Added 1977 Mono Mix where the Cantina Band music can be heard from outside the cantina as the characters walk in • Decreased the volume of the CGI dewback growling, and increased the volume of the mono track where you can hear the cantina band music faintly outside the cantina as they walk in, with the standard 6-channel track still playing beneath • Added 1977 Mono Mix snake creature chirping sound effect • Kept the original "I don't like the look of this" scene, without the added CGI stormtrooper and dewback, but kept the Special Edition dewback growl, and decreased the volume of the audio to make it seem like the growl is coming from the further away practical effect dewback in the background • Special Edition alternate stormtrooper lines in the alley looking for the droids • Fixed an audio/music transition error present in the Special Edition between the shots of the Falcon leaving Mos Eisley and Han in the cockpit. • Special Edition added stormtrooper line “There’s no one here” • Special Edition added C-3PO dialog about Death Star schematics • Kept the Special Edition stormtrooper bumping his head on the door sound effect, but decreased the volume of it slightly so it isn't as cartoonish. Coincidentally, another stormtrooper’s comm static is heard right as this exact moment, which could be misconstrued as the helmet bumping the door anyway. • Special Edition added stormtrooper line "Close the blast door!" for comedic effect, before "Open the blast door!" • Added a ‘dropping out of hyperspace’ sound effect to accompany the visual change from HAL 9000's hyperspace edit • Added a line from the Star Wars radio drama of Luke saying "Biggs?, Biggs!" after Biggs is shot down, from HAL 9000's "Custom Special Edition" • Re-synced AV in a few sequences WATCH THE TRAILER WATCH THE ‘EVERY CHANGE IN STAR WARS: THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY - THE FINAL CUT’ VIDEO
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Primary source: oohteedee's 2019 "Special Edition Regrade" Secondary sources: TeamNegative1's "4K80" (v1.0); oohteedee's "D+80" (v2.0) Adywan's Emporer scene from “Empire Strikes Back: Revisited” Visual Changes: • New color-grade throughout, (using oohteedee’s as a starting point). Enhanced some colors and contrast, and made certain sequences more in line with the look of 4K80 (theatrical print). • Added layer of film grain throughout • 2019 Special Edition 20th Century Fox logo, with 1977 Original Theatrical Lucasfilm logo • Increased vibrance of the colored text from the Lucasfilm logo, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...", and the opening crawl. Changed the shade of blue in the Special Edition end credits to look closer to the theatrical version. • Special Edition reworked Wampa scene • Un-flipped two flipped shots that are present in the official versions of the film, in which Han cuts open the Taun Taun with the lightsaber, to put his rank pips back on the correct side • Special Edition colorized R2-D2 in space • Added Adywan's "Empire Strikes Back: Revisited" reworked Emperor scene, but added back the full 2004 dialogue. Also inserted Vader's theatrical line "Yes, my master" after the Emperor saying “We have a new enemy - the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star", to lessen confusion, since Vader was already hunting “Skywalker” at the beginning of the film. When the Emperor tells Vader he has no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker, Vader replies "how is this possible?", and it is left up to interpretation if Vader is feigning ignorance to the Emperor and has already known this himself, or if this is actually the moment he realizes the young rebel he has been searching for is his son. • Included a shot from the 4K80 theatrical print in which the larger framing and crop restores Leia's face into the frame as she says "the empire is still out there" • Special Edition extended shots arriving at Cloud City • Special Edition open windows in Cloud City • Original theatrical Chewbacca in the junk factory scene from 4K80, without the Special Edition CGI sparks added. Added light DNR, and then placed a layer of smaller grain back on top, to look more cohesive with the rest of the transfer. • Luke vs Vader sequences re-color-graded to appear more dark green than light purple, reminiscent of 4K80. • Fixed the shot reversing at the end of the "No, I am your father" shot, which resulted in Vader suddenly jolting upwards • Special Edition reaction shots to Lando's attention message across the city • Included one of the three added Special Edition shots of Vader's shuttle - the one of it approaching the star destroyer. The other two are unneeded and halt the pacing. • Special Edition added CGI hatch to the Falcon • Special Edition reversed (corrected) Imperial Rank Plaques Audio Changes: • Fixed an error in the Special Edition where the lightsaber deactivating sound effect is present as Luke starts to run out of the Wampa cave, even though the blade is visibly still extended. I moved the sound effect to play as he's walking out of frame where you can't see the blade • Special Edition added Luke’s line “Thanks, Threepio” • Special Edition added back Luke’s line “This is it!”, which is muted in the theatrical version, despite his lip movement • Luke's original "You're lucky you don't taste very good" line to R2-D2, instead of the Special Edition "You were lucky to get out of there" • Special Edition added C-3PO line “There’s nowhere to go” • Special Edition alternate musical score transitions • Used Adywan's sped-up Ian McDiarmid 2004 dialogue to match the timing of the theatrical version, and fits more in-line with how the Emperor speaks in ROTJ. Inserted Vader's theatrical line "Yes, my master" after the Emperor saying "we have a new enemy, the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star", to lessen confusion since Vader was already hunting “Skywalker” at the beginning of the film. Extended the pause before Vader's line delivery of "How is that possible?". • Overlayed both Boba Fett voice actors' lines together from each version. Temuera Morrison is the prominent voice, with Jason Wingreen’s voice subtly in the background, and his dialogue is retimed to match Morrison's delivery cadence. This can be seen as the character's true voice coming through, and his helmet doing a bit of voice modulation. • Original theatrical Vader's dialog "Bring my shuttle", instead of "alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival", with the original musical beats, as the former hits much harder, and matches the tone and pacing far better Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Primary source: oohteedee's 2019 "Special Edition Regrade" Secondary sources: oohteedee's “OTD83” (v1.2); HAL 9000's "Return of the Jedi: Custom Special Edition” Visual Changes: • New color-grade throughout, (using oohteedee’s as a starting point), most notably making the Tatooine skies more blue in the sail barge sequence • Added layer of film grain throughout • 2019 Special Edition 20th Century Fox logo, with 1977 Original Theatrical Lucasfilm logo • Increased vibrance of the colored text from the Lucasfilm logo, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...", and the opening crawl. Changed the shade of blue in the Special Edition end credits to look closer to the theatrical version. • Original theatrical normal-sized Jabba's Palace door • Original "Lapti Nek" song and sequence, instead of the Special Edition "Jedi Rocks", but with the added Special Edition shots of Oola in the Rancor Pit. • Special Edition insert shots of Boba Fett flirting • Original theatrical Han Solo carbonite de-freezing visual effect • Special Edition added CGI dug alien • Special Edition added transitional shots of Banthas in the desert • Redone Sarlaac. Some shots are theatrical, some are Special Edition. I have opted to use the beak and tentacle version for some shots, but I have mitigated some of the questionable CGI by trimming and slowing shots. In the shot above Luke walking the plank and looking down, I have added a rack-focus, making the Sarlaac start off out of focus in the shot, as the focus then shifts to the pit, and Luke becomes out of focus. I have also lowered the audio pitch and volume of the Sarlaac squeals. After Boba Fett is swallowed by the Sarlaac and it retracts further down into the hole, the remaining shots in the sequence are the Theatrical ‘pit-only’ Sarlacc, until the beak comes back up after a tentacle grabs Lando at the end. There are 28 shots of the Sarlaac. Of them, 10 are identical between the theatrical and Special Edition versions. Of the remaining 18, 7 shots are theatrical, and 11 are Special Edition. Of the 11 Special Edition-only shots, 5 of them have been visually altered, to lessen the questionable CGI - either by trimming shots, adding a rack focus, slowing the shot, adding blurs, or multiples of these at once. The last remainder are blink-and-you-miss-it split-second shots. • Original non-blinking, CGI-eyed ewoks, save for one wide-shot • Reinserted never-before-seen deleted shots of Rebel soldiers in Lando’s flight crew (including General Airen Cracken and Lieutenant Blount) running through the Millennium Falcon corridors, and manning the turrets in the final space battle. Repurposed footage is used and adapted to recontextualize these deleted shots back into the action. Reused a few shots from “A New Hope”, but flipped the image. This fits the new context better, and also makes it so that they aren’t direct copies of the “A New Hope shots”. Also re-color-graded them to fit the cooler palette of the ROTJ scene. Added (rotoscoped) green blasts shooting from a TIE Fighter in one shot, and took a TIE Interceptor from a ROTJ shot and added (rotoscoped) it to one of the ANH shots of the turrets to make new shots. • Added one of the restored Rebel gunners (Lieutenant Blount) shots, to act as a reaction shot to the Death Star blowing up the Rebel Cruiser, and added the same rate of light flashing that the following Nien Nunb shot has, to make it appear as if they are looking at the same thing • Original theatrical R2-D2 gadgets popping out • Re-color-graded one shot of Vader’s lightsaber to richen the red • Special Edition Anakin's digitally removed eyebrows • Special Edition updated CGI Death Star explosion • Visually aged-up Hayden Christensen's young Anakin Force Ghost from the Special Edition to appear the proper canonical age that the character of Vader/Anakin actually was when he died. The original actor, Sebastian Shaw, was 78 in the theatrical version, and Hayden Christensen was 23 in the Special Edition. The proper age of 45 is right in the middle of that, and 'The Final Cut' portrays Anakin’s Force Ghost as such, while keeping continuity with the prequels. I also re-rotoscoped his head (which was already done in the Special Edition) to match the movement of the body better. Sebastian Shaw is still the unmasked Vader, but his slightly different appearance in the suit can be explained by his severe injuries and dark side degradation, while his Force Ghost portrays his redeemed and healed middle-aged self. • Reworked the last sequence to include as much footage from each version as possible. It is primarily the Special Edition "Victory Celebration" sequence, with the added planetary celebrations across the galaxy, and added shot of Luke and Wedge hugging, but also restores extended shots of Luke walking up to meet Han and Leia, Luke and Leia's hug, Luke walking up to the Force Ghosts, Luke giving the Force Ghosts a grateful nod before walking away, and the very final shot of everyone. I looped a segment of the score to allow for the approximately 9 added seconds, and to keep the final beat lined up. The theatrical "Yub-Nub" song is good, but this new score composition and scenes are a much more emotionally satisfying and impactful fit for the ending of the trilogy/saga. • Recreated the closing circle wipe transition from the final shot into the closing credits, since I needed the full extended original theatrical shot, but wanted the Special Edition credits. Audio Changes: • Added the Special Edition Sy Snootles line “uh oh” quietly in the background, as Oola falls into the pit and the band stops playing, as an easter egg • Lowered the audio pitch and volume of the Sarlaac squeals, and removed some of them entirely by reverting to the original theatrical audio track • Han's original line "It’s all right. Trust me." instead of "It's all right, I can see a lot better." • Fixed an error in the Special Edition score at 1:06:27 (1:06:11 in The Final Cut) that abruptly hard-cuts out • Looped the score in certain places to add the reworked deleted Rebel soldiers shots back into the mix • Various added sound effects for the reworked deleted Rebel soldiers shots • Used two lines from “Star Wars Battle of Jakku: Radio Chatter" by The Shape Shifter VA, as background chatter in one restored shot • Looped a segment of the “Victory Celebration” score to allow for the approximately 9 added seconds to the sequence, and keep the final beat lined up with the start of the credits.
