POPULATION AGING By 2030, every Baby Boomer will be aged 65 or older, which means that 1 out of every 5 U.S. citizens will be of retirement age. According to Census Bureau projections, as the adult population ages, the old-age dependency ratio (the ratio of older adults to working-age adults) will also shift. By 2020, there will be 3.5 working-age adults for every retirement-age person but by 2060, that ratio will drop to just 2.5. This population boom is also putting increased pressure on Social Security and public health services. As of 2020, the program began paying out more than it takes in, thanks to senior citizens and retirees starting to draw more from Social Security rather than contribute to it. The problem, in a nutshell, is that there will be far more demand than supply of healthcare in the future. This means that healthcare costs will increase, and we'll need to adapt. A swelling senior citizen population equals higher patient volumes, which will further upset the supply and demand balance of healthcare, a problem that's already at a tipping point due to U.S. providers' existing caregiver shortage. o Baby Boomer = a person who was born during a baby boom, especially the one that happened in the UK and the US following the Second World War: thế hệ bùng nổ trẻ sơ sinh o retirement age = the age at which people usually stop working, usually when they are eligible for Social Security or a pension: tuổi nghỉ hưu o projection /prəˈdʒekʃn/ (n) = a calculation or guess about the future based on information that you have: sự dự đoán o ratio of A to B = the relationship between two groups of people or things that is represented by two numbers showing how much larger one group is than the other: tỷ lệ A trên B o population boom: sự bùng nổ dân số o to put pressure on ...: đặt áp lực lên ... o a senior citizen = an older person: người cao tuổi o in a nutshell = very briefly, giving only the main points: tóm tắt lại o to upset something /ʌpˈset/ = to make a plan, situation, etc. go wrong: làm đảo lộn ... o tipping point = the crisis stage in a process, when a significant change takes place: đỉnh điểm Source: https://www.businessinsider.com/aging-population-healthcare SYNONYMS o retirement-age person » retiree
