Class VI Science (Curiosity) Book Solution with Key Notes/Points © kvsecontent.com Chapter 6- Materials Around Us Key Notes Materials and Matter Material: Any substance used to create or make objects. Matter: Anything that occupies space and has mass. All materials are types of matter, but not all matter exists as materials used for making objects Properties of Materials: 1. Appearance-based Properties i. Lustrous: Materials with shiny surfaces (e.g., metals like iron, copper, zinc) ii. Non-lustrous: Materials without shiny surfaces (e.g., wood, paper, rubber) Note: Not all shiny materials are metals - some materials can be made shiny through polishing or coating 2. Optical Properties i. Transparent: Materials through which objects can be seen clearly (e.g., glass, water, air) ii. Translucent: Materials through which objects can be seen, but not clearly (e.g., butter paper, frosted glass) iii. Opaque: Materials through which objects cannot be seen at all (e.g., wood, metals, cardboard) 3. Physical Properties i. Hard: Materials difficult to compress or scratch ii. Soft: Materials easily compressed or scratched Note: Hardness is relative - materials can be harder than some things but softer than others (e.g., rubber is harder than sponge but softer than iron) 4. Solubility Properties i. Soluble: Materials that completely dissolve in water (e.g., sugar, salt) ii. Insoluble: Materials that do not dissolve in water (e.g., sand, sawdust) Material Properties in Daily Life: ▪ Mass gives the quantity of matter present in an object ▪ Volume represents the amount of space occupied by matter ▪ Both mass and volume are universal properties possessed by all materials
