Making the Most of the Sun’s Energy In one hour, the Earth receives enough light from the Sun to power the electricity needed by every human being on the planet for a year. The Sun shines somewhere on the planet every hour of the day, and even when it is cloudy, a large amount of solar energy still reaches the ground. This source of energy will last until the Sun dies in about eight billion years. So why do we have to use oil to produce electricity? The fuel is running out and it damages the environment. The first problem is that, until recently, solar energy panels were not efficient, although it looks like that
problem is being solved. Ten years ago, most solar panels were only about 12% efficient. Now, new types are generally over 40% efficient, which is similar to the figure for electricity produced by burning oil. The second problem is storing the electricity from solar power. The batteries which are used at the moment cost around £5,000 for one house and only last about 10 years. However, MIT, a major US university, has just announced details of a new invention – the concrete battery. Concrete is the hard, grey building material which is used all around the world for most office blocks, factories and houses. The idea is that, with a new kind of concrete, the building itself can store the electricity which it makes through its solar panels. The only energy cost to the owner would then be the price of buying and fitting the panels. Question 31. What is the main point of this text? A. We should stop using oil to make electricity. B. Solar energy will run out in the future. C. The problems with solar energy will be solved. D. Batteries for solar power are expensive and short- lived. Question 32. Many countries are now investing in solar power because it is good for the environment. (37) ......... Solar panels can be installed on rooftops to produce electricity for homes.
