Aligned EU energy targets with climate ambitions for 2030 and 2050, with further revisions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, aiming to phase out Russian fossil fuels and increase renewables to 40% by 2030. Consisting of 13 proposals and six new legislative initiatives, the “Fit for 55” package aims to align EU laws with the Paris Agreement, reinforcing its leadership in climate action. This very comprehensive set of proposals covers everything from carbon trading, to transport fuel, to gas and hydrogen, and the electricity market design or energy taxation. Initiated amid high post-pandemic energy prices, its main goals are to: Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030. Achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. July 2021 Revision (RED III): increased the target to 40% by 2030. May 2022 REPowerEU Plan: further increased the target to 45% by 2030, with simplified permitting processes and the RES Booster Regulation to expedite renewable projects. 2021 - Fifth Energy Package Renewable Energy Targets (%) RED I (2009) RED II (2019) RED III (2021) REPowerEU Plan 20% 32% 40% 45% 4 European Union Energy Policy - July 2024 Policy evolution & milestones © EU Training © EU Training | All rights reserved.
