Ian Kiernan: Cleaning Up the World In 1987, Ian Kiernan was sailing around the world when he saw a lot of trash in the oceans. He decided to do something about it. In 1989, Ian organized an event called Clean Up Sydney Harbor in Australia. He was surprised when 40,000 people came to help. The next year, he made it a national event. About 300,000 people across Australia joined in to clean up their local areas. Clean Up Australia Day has happened every year since then, getting bigger each time. In 1993, Ian started an even bigger project called Clean Up the World. This helps people in many countries clean up their environment. In the first year, more than 30 million people in 80 countries took part. Today, Clean Up Australia Day attracts over 500,000 volunteers. They pick up thousands of tons of trash from beaches, parks, streets, and rivers. They find things like cigarettes, bottles, plastic bags, and food wrappers.

Reasons for Becoming Vegetarian People choose to become vegetarians for different reasons. Some people follow a vegetarian diet because they believe killing animals is wrong. They see it as the ethical choice. Others choose vegetarianism for health reasons, as it can help them stay slim and lower their risk of various diseases. Recently, more people are switching to a vegetarian diet to protect the environment. Researchers from the Union of Concerned Scientists in the U.S. released a report on how consumer behavior impacts the environment. Their study showed that eating meat is one of the main ways humans harm the environment, second only to using motor vehicles. But how can changing our diets make a difference? We can compare the resources needed to produce meat and crops. For example, nearly 20,000 liters of water are needed to produce one kilogram of beef, but only 150 liters of water are needed to produce one kilogram of wheat. Similarly, one hectare (or 10,000 square meters) of farmland used for raising livestock produces about 227 kilograms of beef. The same amount of farmland can produce 13,600 kilograms of carrots, 18,000 kilograms of potatoes, or 22,700 kilograms of tomatoes. It’s clear that producing crops instead of meat makes more efficient use of land and water. Raising livestock also contributes to global warming. Animals like cows, pigs, and sheep release methane, a greenhouse gas that causes global warming, when they pass gas. One cow can produce about 500 liters of methane each day. A 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says that livestock farming accounts for 37 percent of all methane production. Methane may have a more damaging effect on the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. There is growing support for vegetarianism. For example, schools across England and the U.S. hold "Meat Free Mondays" to show students how easy it is to eat less meat. Some people take it further and embrace a vegan diet, which excludes all animal products like cheese, eggs, and milk. However, some nutritionists believe that a vegan diet may lack essential vitamins and minerals. Question 34: Which of the following could be the best title for the passage? A. The Health Benefits of Vegetarianism B. Environmental Impacts of Meat Consumption C. Reasons for Becoming Vegetarian D. Vegetarianism vs. Veganism Question 35: The word “slim” in paragraph 1 is opposite in meaning to __________.
