Introduction Give feedback on the last essay about ‘The Gate”. Share a stand-out essay with the students. Ask them what they liked about the essay. Discuss features used. Punctuation. You will need: A4 lined exercise book, dictionary/thesaurus, dark blue or black pen, and grey lead pencils. Expectations Students must submit their homework on time (as requested by the writing teacher) to get the most out of the program and to get feedback. Late submissions will miss out. Students must submit their writing on Saturday or Sunday, depending on the day of their class. Would You Rather... These are simple questions that all children can answer as there is no right or wrong answer. Children are to write their answers in their writing book. Give children 30 seconds to decide
and give a reason. Discuss as a grade and allow children to share their reasons. See if anyone has decided to change their mind. Focus (1): Let’s get our thinking caps on! Set a timer for 40 seconds (recommended) or choose a time you wish to spend on each quick think activity. Time should not exceed 2 minutes per topic. Ask students to write as much as they can about the topics in their writing books. Today’s Quick Writes QW#1 What do you enjoy doing on your devices? (iPad, television, computer, phone etc) QW#2 How long do you spend each day playing on your device? Do you think this is an appropriate amount of time? Explain your reasoning. QW#3 What are the benefits and negatives of using your devices? How does it affect your wellbeing? Focus (2): Technology words The list below includes some words that students may find useful for this week’s writing topic. Ask students whether they know the meaning of any of these words. When necessary, explain the meaning of these words. Call on students to try to use these words in sentences.
Focus (3): This week’s writing task – Persuasive Writing Persuasive writing is giving your opinion on what you think, feel, and believe. To persuade means to convince. Using the OREO structure will establish how to write a persuasive paragraph. Writing a draft in their draft book encourages children to begin the important process of self- editing their writing. Then their final copy is presented to the teacher. The final copy is the writing piece that the child should be most proud of. Focus 4: Video This video explains what screen time is and the negative effects it can have. Mission 11 Harmful Effects of Excessive Screen Time - YouTube
Discussion on the video Screen time: is a term used for activities done in front of a screen, such as watching television, working on a computer, or playing video games. Screen time is a sedentary activity, meaning you are being physically inactive while sitting down. Very little energy is used during screen time. Focus (5): Planning Pages Brainstorming Get the children to write down if they agree or disagree with the statement “Too much screen time is bad for your health.” Children can be separated into groups. Make a list of reasons for both sides of the argument on the whiteboard. Model and complete with the children on the whiteboard. It is strongly encouraged that students use the OREO format sheet above to help plan their persuasive before writing their drafts.
